A man who had 12 aliases and 14 addresses has come under the scrutiny of the authorities in Canada, who argue that almost $100,000 seized from the man, who self-identified as a "chronic high-stakes gambler,” might be linked to money laundering activities.
A Superior Court of Justice in Newmarket has ordered the forfeiture of the $99,200 seized from Branavan Kanapathipillai at the Niagara Fallsview Casino Resort in 2022.
It was argued by the Attorney General of Ontario that the significant funds were likely linked to money laundering rather than gambling at casino destinations, and Judge Phillip Sutherland ruled that the evidence suggested the money could not be accounted for by Kanapathipillai's income.
As well as the 12 aliases and 14 addresses, the court noted that Kanapathipillai had a complex financial history that raised suspicions of illegal activity.
In Kanapathipillai’s defense, his lawyer, James Foy, argued that the seized funds came from a third mortgage and a line of credit.
He confirmed plans to appeal the court’s decision, expressing disappointment with the ruling and alleging judicial errors.
The case is part of a broader issue regarding money laundering at Ontario casinos, highlighted by ongoing investigations and regulatory actions, including a $70,000 fine issued to the casino operator for anti-money laundering violations.
Most of my career was spent in teaching including at one of the UK’s top private schools. I left London in 2000 and set up home in Wales raising four beautiful children. I enrolled at University where I studied Photography and film and gained a Degree and subsequently a Masters Degree. In 2014 I helped launch a new local newspaper and managed to get front and back page as well as 6 filler pages on a weekly basis. I saw that journalism was changing and was a pioneer of hyperlocal news in Wales. In 2017 I started one of the first 24/7 free independent news sites for Wales. Having taken that to a successful business model I was keen for a new challenge. Joining the company is exciting for me especially as it is a new role in Europe. I am keen to establish myself and help others to do the same.
