Could Brad Pitt, Kim Kardashian, or a British royal be next to blast off into space? (Image: Associated Press / Alamy)
Oh, celebs—they’re just like us! While we’re out there trying our luck in casino destinations, Katy Perry looks set to become the first pop megastar to blast into space later this year.
The Firework hitmaker, former news anchor Lauren Sanchez, and CBS This Morning anchor Gayle King are expected to make the epic jaunt, as part of an all-female crew. Sanchez "brought the mission together" ahead of the blastoff on her husband Jeff Bezos' Blue Origin rocket this spring.
Blue Origin said in a statement: "[Sanchez] is honored to lead a team of explorers on a mission that will challenge their perspectives of Earth, empower them to share their own stories, and create lasting impact that will inspire generations to come."
Perry's space jaunt won't be the first time a celebrity has blasted off into space, though.
William Shatner, who is best known for playing Star Trek's Captain James T Kirk, boldly went into space on Bezos' Blue Origin New Shepard in October 2021 at the age of 90, and he even wrote a memoir detailing his trip, among other life experiences.
Celebrity | Odds |
---|---|
Brad Pitt | 11/10 |
Leonardo DiCaprio | 5/4 |
Kim Kardashian | 13/8 |
Kris Jenner | 13/8 |
Orlando Bloom | 2/1 |
Rihanna | 5/2 |
Pete Davidson | 3/1 |
Angelina Jolie | 4/1 |
Lana Del Rey | 9/2 |
Jessica Alba | 5/1 |
Eva Longoria | 5/1 |
Brooks Nader | 6/1 |
Oprah Winfrey | 7/1 |
Khloe Kardashian | 8/1 |
Kourtney Kardashian | 8/1 |
Kendall Jenner | 10/1 |
Kylie Jenner | 10/1 |
Good Morning America anchor Michael Strahan has also headed into space before. He travelled on Bezos' Blue Origin in December 2021, becoming the first US news anchor to leave Earth. Upon hitting dry land again, he told the multi-billionaire: "That was beyond. I want to go back."
But aside from Perry, Sanchez and King, which other celebrities could head into space next?
Brad Pitt is previously said to have expressed a big space travel desire and even went as far as splashing out $500,000 for two tickets – the other for his now-ex wife Angelina Jolie – on Richard Branson's SpaceShipTwo in 2014. But the journey didn't ever happen after a SpaceShipTwo prototype crashed during a 2014 test flight.
While Ad Astra star is yet to make it into space, he could be inspired to give it another go following the news that Perry is to make the trip. He is an 11/10 favourite to be the next celebrity in space, while fellow Hollywood star Leonardo DiCaprio is just 5/4.
DiCaprio, who also bought a seat on Branson's SpaceShipTwo rocket, is now good pals with Bezos, so it wouldn't be a surprise to see him on the Blue Origin soon.
Odds favor Leonardo DiCaprio at 5/4 and Kris Jenner at 13/8 to be the next celebrities to head into space.
What's more, if Perry enjoys her jaunt in the rocket, she could come home and tell her Hollywood actor boyfriend Orlando Bloom all about it. Bloom (2/1), like DiCaprio, is also good pals with Bezos.
What's more, Sanchez could convince several of her celebrity friends to blast off in her husband's spaceship next.
Jessica Alba (5/1), Eva Longoria (5/1), and Brooks Nader (6/1) are all close pals with Sanchez. The trio are in contention for a space trip, as is chat show queen Oprah Winfrey, whom King consulted before signing up for the mission.
King explained, "Once Kirby and Will and Oprah were fine with it, I was fine. I thought Oprah would say, 'No, no.'
"She said, 'I think if you don't do it, when they all come back and you had the opportunity to do it, you will be kicking yourself.' She's right."
Winfrey is just 7/1 to head into space herself following King's comments.
Reality TV star Kim Kardashian and her momager Kris Jenner are also good pals with Sanchez, and they have been linked to space travel before.
In 2017, Kris was said to be keen to shoot a Keeping Up With The Kardashians episode in the cosmos, via Richard Branson's Virgin Galactic space shuttle.
An insider close to Kris told Heat magazine at the time: "Kris is fascinated by outer space, and is looking into paying for her and the family to be among the first passengers on Virgin's commercial space shuttle.
"Kris just signed a $150 million deal that will keep their reality show until the end of 2019. The pressure is on to keep things exciting, and what better way than by filming an episode in space?
"They'd be the first family to orbit the planet, and Kris is convinced she’s hit on the ultimate storyline."
Duchess Meghan leads the odds at 7/4 to be the first British royal in space.
The Kardashians are known for their out-of-this-world antics, so it wouldn't be a huge surprise to see them in space. Kim is just 13/8 to make such a journey, the same price as her mum Kris, and if they go, several family members could follow.
Kim's sisters Khloe and Kourtney Kardashian are both 8/1 outsiders to make such a trip, while the trio's half-sisters Kylie and Kendall Jenner – who was once spotted wearing a "Fly Me to the Moon" top – are both 10/1.
A royal in space is nothing new.
In 1985, astronaut Sultan ibn Salman Al Saud became the first member of the royal family in space, and he also the first Saudi Arabian citizen, first Arab, and first Muslim to make such an epic jaunt.
However, at the time of writing, a member of the British Royal Family is yet to blast into space.
Royal Family Member | Odds |
---|---|
Duchess Meghan | 7/4 |
Prince Harry | 2/1 |
Princess Beatrice | 5/2 |
Princess Eugenie | 3/1 |
Prince William | 4/1 |
Duchess Catherine | 4/1 |
King Charles | 5/1 |
Duchess Camilla | 6/1 |
Zara Tindall | 8/1 |
Mike Tindall | 8/1 |
Princess Anne | 10/1 |
Sarah Ferguson, Duchess of York | 12/1 |
While Prince Harry and Duchess Meghan stepped back from official royal duties in 2020, they still have their royal titles, and it wouldn't be a complete shock to see the former Suits actress rock up in space soon.
She is 7/4 to make the trip, just ahead of her husband Harry (2/1).
Princess Beatrice (5/2) and Princess Eugenie (3/1) are also in contention, and King Charles has previously expressed an interest in space sustainability.
In 2023, he hosted a space sustainability event at Buckingham Palace, during which he welcomed astronauts and business leaders, among others, to the palace.
He is 5/1 to be the first British Royal Family member in space, while Sarah Ferguson, the Duchess of York, is a 12/1 outsider, despite not being an official member of the royal family.
