What would you do if someone offered you a £350,000 dream home, one you might only get if you won the lottery or a slot jackpot? The incredible answer one 18-year-old gave was that he did not want it as there were too many rooms.
18-year-old George Radford stunned everyone when he won a National Lottery competition that offered either a stunning six-bedroom house worth £350,000 or a massive £300,000 cash prize. But in an unexpected twist, George decided to walk away from the luxury property, declaring it “just too big” for his needs.
“I couldn’t believe it when they told me I had won,” said George, who shared the news with his family in Hambleton.
“The house is lovely, but there are so many rooms! It’s just overwhelming.” Instead of embracing the windfall and the extravagant lifestyle that comes with it, George has his feet firmly planted on the ground, choosing to take the cash and aim for a more manageable home. "I want to buy a smaller house in Hambleton or Poulton; I’m not in any rush."
Working diligently in the kitchen at The Shovels pub while also juggling another shop job, George is already carving out his own path. He dreams of a career in IT, and this life-changing win won't derail his plans. “It’s a large sum of money, but I still want to earn my keep,” he explained.
The excitement surrounding George’s win has been palpable, especially for his mother, Lou Wane.
"You never think something like this will happen to you," Lou said, beaming with pride. "We were all ecstatic when we found out he won."
George had entered the competition just three days after his birthday, watching the live draw streamed on the Elite Competitions YouTube channel when he realized he had struck gold. The company, which has made waves in the UK since appearing on BBC Two's Dragons' Den, has transformed countless lives by offering incredible prizes, from cash bonanzas to luxurious homes and even Lamborghinis.
With over 368,000 dreams fulfilled, Elite Competitions has left a permanent mark on the lottery landscape. Yet, amidst all this opportunity, George’s humble choice stands out as truly remarkable, reminding us all that sometimes, it’s not just about the prize—it’s about knowing what truly matters in life.
Most of my career was spent in teaching including at one of the UK’s top private schools. I left London in 2000 and set up home in Wales raising four beautiful children. I enrolled at University where I studied Photography and film and gained a Degree and subsequently a Masters Degree. In 2014 I helped launch a new local newspaper and managed to get front and back page as well as 6 filler pages on a weekly basis. I saw that journalism was changing and was a pioneer of hyperlocal news in Wales. In 2017 I started one of the first 24/7 free independent news sites for Wales. Having taken that to a successful business model I was keen for a new challenge. Joining the company is exciting for me especially as it is a new role in Europe. I am keen to establish myself and help others to do the same.
