A former bingo hall looks set to be changed into a self-storage facility after plans were recommended for approval by North Lincolnshire Council.
The bingo hall operated by Buzz Bingo is located on Brigg Road in Scunthorpe and applications have been turned down on two previous occasions. Councillors are due to hear the recommended plans later today, Wednesday Feb 12.
The plans have been submitted by Zirconia Trading Ltd, supported by Boyer and POD Architects. The plans for the storage facility do not require any external alterations to the building.
The trend of bingo halls closing or being repurposed has been widely reported on by Casinos.com. In this instance the applicants claim that the change of use would "provide for significant investment into the site to produce a modern and functional building.” Buzz Bingo currently operates the hall on a flexible basis.
There had been concerns raised over the loss of a community facility and loss of employment, but the proposals complied with policy CS22 of the Core Strategy.
The council report stated: "In addition, the provision of self-storage facilities at the site would be consistent with the council's strategic aims to support small and start-up businesses.
"This would help deliver positive economic impacts which weigh in favour of the application in the overall planning balance."
A Buzz Bingo spokesperson said: "We have a lease in place at our Scunthorpe club for the foreseeable future. We are pleased to play our part in the local community, welcoming our valued customers and providing a vibrant friendly space for everyone to enjoy."
Most of my career was spent in teaching including at one of the UK’s top private schools. I left London in 2000 and set up home in Wales raising four beautiful children. I enrolled at University where I studied Photography and film and gained a Degree and subsequently a Masters Degree. In 2014 I helped launch a new local newspaper and managed to get front and back page as well as 6 filler pages on a weekly basis. I saw that journalism was changing and was a pioneer of hyperlocal news in Wales. In 2017 I started one of the first 24/7 free independent news sites for Wales. Having taken that to a successful business model I was keen for a new challenge. Joining the company is exciting for me especially as it is a new role in Europe. I am keen to establish myself and help others to do the same.
