Fantasy Sports Provider Sorare Charged With Providing Unlicensed Gambling in the UK

Fantasy football gaming and marketplace operator Sorare are due to appear in court next week charged with providing unlicensed gambling facilities to consumers in Britain. The hearing, prosecuted by the Gambling Commission, will take place at Birmingham Magistrates' Court at 10 a.m. on October 4th.

Sorare is charged with providing facilities for gambling without holding an operating license, contrary to sections 33(1), (4), and 36(3), (3A) of the Gambling Act 2005. The Commission will not be commenting further on the case until its conclusion.

Regulators Urged to Go after Those Operating Outside of the Rules

The case qualifies the recent comments from Entain's Chairman, Barry Gibson, who insists that regulators must go after those who are not playing by the rules. Mr. Gibson has a wealth of experience in the gambling industry and only recently warned of the need to rein in those who are operating outside of the rules. It remains to be seen whether Sorare are found guilty of the charges.

Most of my career was spent in teaching including at one of the UK’s top private schools. I left London in 2000 and set up home in Wales raising four beautiful children. I enrolled at University where I studied Photography and film and gained a Degree and subsequently a Masters Degree. In 2014 I helped launch a new local newspaper and managed to get front and back page as well as 6 filler pages on a weekly basis. I saw that journalism was changing and was a pioneer of hyperlocal news in Wales. In 2017 I started one of the first 24/7 free independent news sites for Wales. Having taken that to a successful business model I was keen for a new challenge. Joining the company is exciting for me especially as it is a new role in Europe. I am keen to establish myself and help others to do the same.
