West Northampton Council has approved plans for the opening of a 24/7 mini casino destination at premises formerly used as a sex toy and lingerie shop by the Ann Summers company, which closed in 2023.
The council rubber-stamped the plans by Merkur Slots for the casino on Abingdon Street.
Free tea and coffee will be on offer for customers at the casino, perhaps making a welcome change from the sex toys and lingerie that were on offer.
A spokesperson for Merkur Slots said, “The principle of the proposed change of use is entirely acceptable, and the proposals will protect and enhance the vitality and viability of this part of the town centre.
The proposal involves the bringing back of a longstanding vacant unit into beneficial/commercial use, which will trigger several economic benefits and will allow an established operator within this part of the town centre to relocate and continue contributing to the centre.
"Given the nature of the proposal and the commercial context of the site, 24-hour opening is considered acceptable in this location.” added spokesperson.
The council has spent over £17 million refurbishing the market square area as well as Abingdon Street. Merkur Slots has premises a little way down Abingdon Street, but the lease there is set to expire.
The approval has been met with some disapproval, with Councillor Danielle Stone saying, “I am outraged. All that money spent upgrading the Market Square to make it attractive to visitors and locals, and then the council allows this. Where is the sense?
"This push-me-pull-you development will not generate interest or draw in crowds. A casino is yet another tax on the already poor. The money spent goes out of the town and out of the country. We need local businesses that support the local economy."
Most of my career was spent in teaching including at one of the UK’s top private schools. I left London in 2000 and set up home in Wales raising four beautiful children. I enrolled at University where I studied Photography and film and gained a Degree and subsequently a Masters Degree. In 2014 I helped launch a new local newspaper and managed to get front and back page as well as 6 filler pages on a weekly basis. I saw that journalism was changing and was a pioneer of hyperlocal news in Wales. In 2017 I started one of the first 24/7 free independent news sites for Wales. Having taken that to a successful business model I was keen for a new challenge. Joining the company is exciting for me especially as it is a new role in Europe. I am keen to establish myself and help others to do the same.
