Gambling Commission Hails Success of GamProtect

Last week the Gambling Commission supported the launch of GamProtect, which protects those most at risk from serious gambling harms through compliantly and securely with other participating software providers and operators.

The Gambling Commission states that thanks to the efforts of industry in this area, thousands of people have already been protected using GamProtect, which is helping to make gambling, at land based and online casinos alike, safer for all.

Tim Miller, the Executive Director, delivered a speech at the GamProtect Launch Event on September 11, 2024. In the speech, he said: “We recognise that often we can make quicker progress towards safer gambling by working with industry and others that we often can alone.

"And as with other challenges and projects in the past, that is the case with GamProtect. Collaborative working has made it possible, and we are certain that the future GamProtect will be stronger through collaboration too.”

Significant Progress Made

Miller noted that discussions started over four years ago regarding the 'Single Customer View,' aiming to protect consumers while ensuring data security. Significant progress has been made since the project's inception, particularly through the collaboration between various stakeholders, including the Gambling Commission, the Betting and Gaming Council (BGC), and the Information Commissioner’s Office (ICO).

GamProtect allows operators to share risk flags regarding consumers who exhibit markers of gambling harm without disclosing personal data. This system provides a holistic view of consumer risk, enhancing operator awareness and intervention capabilities.

Thousands of Consumers Identified as ‘At Risk’

To date, GamProtect has identified over 5,500 consumers at risk, with substantial participation already from major operators. The system has undergone rigorous testing and is showing positive results in reducing potential harms.

Miller urged all operators to engage with GamProtect, highlighting the need for broader participation to further develop and refine the initiative. He noted that participation could shape the future of gambling regulation and promote safer practices within the industry.

Miller said: “As regulators for gambling in Great Britain, we’d encourage all licensed operators to find out more about GamProtect through the Betting and Gaming Council and to sign up.”

Potential for Future Mandates Possible

The Executive Director mentioned that the 2023 White Paper outlines the potential for future mandates regarding participation in such initiatives if voluntary engagement does not increase, positioning GamProtect as a proactive solution for operators.

In conclusion, Miller emphasised that now is the time for operators to get involved to protect consumers and contribute to the ongoing success of GamProtect.

Most of my career was spent in teaching including at one of the UK’s top private schools. I left London in 2000 and set up home in Wales raising four beautiful children. I enrolled at University where I studied Photography and film and gained a Degree and subsequently a Masters Degree. In 2014 I helped launch a new local newspaper and managed to get front and back page as well as 6 filler pages on a weekly basis. I saw that journalism was changing and was a pioneer of hyperlocal news in Wales. In 2017 I started one of the first 24/7 free independent news sites for Wales. Having taken that to a successful business model I was keen for a new challenge. Joining the company is exciting for me especially as it is a new role in Europe. I am keen to establish myself and help others to do the same.
