The Information Commissioner’s Office has set out a raft of new measures that support the government’s growth agenda.
Information Commissioner John Edwards met with Chancellor of the Exchequer Rachel Reeves—who was recently criticized for reopening ‘Casino UK’—this morning to agree on the commitments of the data protection regulator.
Speaking after the meeting, he said, “Personal data powers our economy, from retail to hospitality, online casinos, and healthcare. Unlocking the potential of this data is key to encouraging economic growth and investment—as long as the public can trust that it will be appropriately protected.
“There’s a responsibility on all regulators to create an environment where businesses can flourish, particularly for the ICO as a whole economy regulator.
“We’ve already helped tens of thousands of businesses, and we’re providing the regulatory certainty and support that they need to safely innovate."
The global casino industry is experiencing significant economic growth, with projections indicating a substantial increase in market value and revenue in the coming years, driven by factors like technological advancements, tourism, and increasing online gambling participation.

Pilot Programme for Privacy-Preserving Advertising Models
The ICO experimentation regime will introduce a statutory code of practice for private and public sector businesses developing or deploying AI, allowing them to unleash the possibilities of the technology while safeguarding the public’s privacy—and strengthening the UK’s position as a global AI leader.
The ICO is also offering AI guidance. The ICO claims to be reducing red tape for businesses by facilitating privacy-friendly online advertising through regulatory reviews and encouraging investment in unintrusive advertising models.
A privacy-friendly advertising review will see the ICO publish new guidance on international transfers of data, which underpins around 40% of UK exports and 20% of imports.
This move wll make it easier for UK businesses to access new markets and partners.
Writing on his blog, Mr Edwards said: “While our primary duty as a regulator is to protect personal data, we also have choices on how we regulate and enforce the law, and we’ve given a lot of thought to those choices.
"We could regulate in a way that makes businesses fearful and risk-averse; however, we have chosen to take a regulatory approach that reduces friction and encourages businesses to invest and innovate.”
Most of my career was spent in teaching including at one of the UK’s top private schools. I left London in 2000 and set up home in Wales raising four beautiful children. I enrolled at University where I studied Photography and film and gained a Degree and subsequently a Masters Degree. In 2014 I helped launch a new local newspaper and managed to get front and back page as well as 6 filler pages on a weekly basis. I saw that journalism was changing and was a pioneer of hyperlocal news in Wales. In 2017 I started one of the first 24/7 free independent news sites for Wales. Having taken that to a successful business model I was keen for a new challenge. Joining the company is exciting for me especially as it is a new role in Europe. I am keen to establish myself and help others to do the same.
