We are all familiar with the Monopoly board and the most expensive area to land on being Park Lane and Mayfair. It may be a game but the property and businesses in those areas still hold their prominence financially and reputationally in the UK.
The prospect of owning a piece of that was all too great for Wynn Resorts, who have announced its agreement to acquire Crown London Aspinalls, an exclusive private members’ casino in London, complete with the iconic brass elephant at the red front door. Crown London spans two historic townhouses at 27–28 Curzon Street.
The final dotting of the I’s is expected to take place in the latter half of 2025 for the Nasdaq-listed casino destination and leisure group.
The casino has a long history, as one would expect for such an exclusive venue. It was founded in 1960 by its namesake, John Aspinall. The late Aspinall was a charismatic and influential figure, renowned within the London gaming establishment.
Aspinall was instrumental in the passing of the Betting and Gaming Act of 1960 that opened the door for legalised casinos and a founding member of the Claremont set.
For the next three decades, Aspinalls’ name became synonymous with premium gaming and exclusivity.
The casino venue was purchased by Crown Resorts in 2011 and formed part of that company’s expansion into the UK and European markets before they were acquired by US PE fund Blackstone for $9 billion.
Wynn Resorts CEO Craig Billings said, “Acquiring this iconic property gives us a foothold in a global gateway city and creates a pathway for Wynn guests to explore our resorts, particularly Wynn Al Marjan Island, which is set to open in early 2027 in Ras Al Khaimah, United Arab Emirates.”
Nestled in the heart of Mayfair, Crown London is a landmark site conveniently positioned close to both Hyde Park and Green Park, near the famous Saville Row and Bond Street shopping areas, just a few blocks from Buckingham Palace.
Wynn Resorts said, “The casino will retain the Crown London name until the deal is complete.”
Most of my career was spent in teaching including at one of the UK’s top private schools. I left London in 2000 and set up home in Wales raising four beautiful children. I enrolled at University where I studied Photography and film and gained a Degree and subsequently a Masters Degree. In 2014 I helped launch a new local newspaper and managed to get front and back page as well as 6 filler pages on a weekly basis. I saw that journalism was changing and was a pioneer of hyperlocal news in Wales. In 2017 I started one of the first 24/7 free independent news sites for Wales. Having taken that to a successful business model I was keen for a new challenge. Joining the company is exciting for me especially as it is a new role in Europe. I am keen to establish myself and help others to do the same.
