The world's most prestigious tennis tournament, Wimbledon, is gearing up for the 2024 tournament with the usual supply of strawberries, cream and Pimms, but this year, the All-England Lawn Tennis Club has partnered with IBM's AI platform, WatsonX, to bring fans a more immersive and personalized experience.
Tennis fans can watch games and stay up to date via IBM’s Generative AI. For the first time, fans will have access to match data and generative AI through the IBM WatsonX app, which provides pre- and post-match player cards with AI-generated player stories and analysis.
The app also offers match previews and reviews for ladies' and gentlemen's singles matches, as well as player profiles, statistics, and news. For the first time, this technology will also be used for wheelchair events.
We downloaded the app, which is free and available via the App store, Google Play Store and wimbledon.com. I was amazed at how much information there was and how it could help me increase my odds of betting on the winner of a game on casino sites or even on winner of the whole tournament.
It is full of features like pre- and post-match player cards with AI-generated player profiles, status and statistics.
When you have downloaded the app, you create a personal profile. The qualifying stages are already in progress and all that information is there. Who’s playing who and when. It is a tennis fan's dream and a punter’s dream.
Pre-match content will include analysis of recent performance and likelihood to win predictions, and post-match content will include key statistics and highlights.
The model has been trained in the Wimbledon editorial style and will be monitored by the All-England Club.
"We are committed to offering fans the highest quality Wimbledon experience," said Chris Clements, Digital Products Lead at the All-England Club.
"Generative AI allows us to scale our ability to provide different types of content for fans wherever they are in the world in a way that's personalized for them." - added Clements.
Jonathan Adashek, Senior Vice President of Marketing and Communications for IBM, added: "The new Catch Me Up feature is an exciting example of how we can use the power of generative AI to deliver compelling, insight-driven storytelling at scale. We're proud to be partnering with Wimbledon to bring this innovation to tennis fans worldwide."
According to a recent study by IBM and Morning Consult, 55% of global tennis fans believe AI will have a positive impact on sports. The same study found that 47% of fans engage with additional tennis content daily or weekly, with summarisation and personalisation being the most important features.
Now you can use your smartphone and have the most detailed information on Wimbledon 2024 at your fingertips, which may or may not help you pick out the winners. Anyone for tennis?
Most of my career was spent in teaching including at one of the UK’s top private schools. I left London in 2000 and set up home in Wales raising four beautiful children. I enrolled at University where I studied Photography and film and gained a Degree and subsequently a Masters Degree. In 2014 I helped launch a new local newspaper and managed to get front and back page as well as 6 filler pages on a weekly basis. I saw that journalism was changing and was a pioneer of hyperlocal news in Wales. In 2017 I started one of the first 24/7 free independent news sites for Wales. Having taken that to a successful business model I was keen for a new challenge. Joining the company is exciting for me especially as it is a new role in Europe. I am keen to establish myself and help others to do the same.
