Could Liverpool FC be Musk's next big acquisition? (Image: Valerio Rosati / GK Images / Alamy)
Elon Musk has enough money to buy pretty much whatever he wants—and that includes a UK-based football team. The Tesla co-founder is the richest person in the world, with a reported net worth of $421.2 billion. He owns space exploration company SpaceX, and in 2022 he forked out a whopping $44 billion to acquire social media site X, which was formerly known as Twitter.
His father, Errol Musk, has been doing the rounds in the British media of late, and one subject that has cropped up is his son's potential interest in splashing out on a Premier League club.
Errol told how Elon "would like to" purchase the club but joked he didn't want to discuss it in too much detail in case the club's owners hiked up the price for his son.
When asked if Elon wants to buy Liverpool FC, Errol said on Times Radio: "I can’t comment on that; they’ll raise the price. Oh yes, [he has expressed a desire], but that doesn’t mean he’s buying it. He would like to, yes, obviously. Anybody would want to—so would I."
Odds On Elon Musk Buying Liverpool FC | |
---|---|
Yes | 4/6 |
No | 6/4 |
While it might seem like a potentially random acquisition for the businessman, there is some substance to the speculation—as Errol explained, he and his lad have family connections in the English city.
He added, "His grandmother was born in Liverpool, and we have relatives in Liverpool, and we were fortunate to know quite a few of the Beatles because they grew up with some of my family. So, we are attached to Liverpool, you know."
Liverpool is said to be valued in the region of around £4 billion to £5 billion, but Musk has reportedly been warned it might cost him up to £8 billion if he were to buy the club.
That said, it's 4/6 that Musk does buy Liverpool one day, but it may not be a likely transaction in the near future. Liverpool's owners, Fenway Sports Group—who acquired the club in 2010—have insisted they aren't in negotiations with Musk.
A spokesperson for FSG said, "No truth to these rumours."
It's 6/4 that Musk doesn't ever acquire the Reds—but could he purchase one of their big rivals instead?
Based on some of his previous comments, it wouldn't be a huge surprise if Elon acquired Manchester United one day. Again, it would be a shock if such a deal took place soon, particularly as United's owner, Sir Jim Ratcliffe, only completed his £1.25 billion deal for the Red Devils last February.
However, Elon has previously expressed an interest. In 2022, he took to Twitter—as it was then known—and wrote:
There was a mixed reaction from United fans across the globe, and Elon later insisted he was just joking but did say United would be his main target if he was planning to invest in a sports team.
He added, "No, this is a long-running joke on Twitter. I’m not buying any sports teams. Although, if it were any team, it would be Man Utd. They were my fav team as a kid."
Elon is 11/8 to acquire the Red Devils one day, but if he wants to dip into NFL ownership, there are two likely contenders. The businessman has previously drawn criticism after he appeared to show support for two NFL teams—the Pittsburgh Steelers and Philadelphia Eagles.
It's 2/1 that Musk takes ownership of either side at some point, but he might want an American football team closer to home.
Odds On Which Sports Teams Elon Musk Will Buy (Excluding Liverpool FC) | |
---|---|
Manchester United | 11/8 |
Pittsburgh Steelers | 2/1 |
Philadelphia Eagles | 2/1 |
Real Madrid | 3/1 |
Barcelona | 4/1 |
Manchester City | 6/1 |
Houston Texans | 8/1 |
Bayern Munich | 10/1 |
Musk lives in Texas, so he could splash out on the Houston Texans NFL team (8/1), which are owned by American businessman Cal McNair. However, two football clubs Musk looks incredibly unlikely to acquire are German outfits Werder Bremen and St Pauli, after they both left X.
St. Pauli claimed in a statement that Musk had 'converted X into a hate machine' since he took over the platform. Bremen didn't hold back either, accusing him of 'utilising the social network as a political weapon.'
But if he is one day keen to own a football club that isn't Liverpool or Manchester United, then the likes of Real Madrid (3/1), Barcelona (4/1) and Manchester City (6/1) could all be in his sights.
While Musk might soon be delving into football ownership in the UK, some have already beaten him to it. It's now well known that Hollywood stars Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney co-own Welsh side Wrexham, and NFL legend Tom Brady has invested in Birmingham City. What's more, basketball legend LeBron James has a minority stake in Liverpool and AC Milan, while former NFL star JJ Watt is a minority investor in Burnley.
But who is next?
Odds On Celebrities Who Will Invest In A UK-Based Football Club | |
---|---|
Snoop Dogg | 11/10 |
A$AP Rocky | 13/8 |
Kim Kardashian | 2/1 |
Dwayne 'The Rock' Johnson | 5/2 |
Danny DeVito | 3/1 |
Sylvester Stallone | 4/1 |
Tom Hanks | 6/1 |
Samuel L. Jackson | 8/1 |
Hugh Grant | 10/1 |
Snoop Dogg is the 11/10 favourite to invest in a UK-based football team after he recently dropped a huge hint he is keen to put some money into Scottish giants Celtic.
Speaking to Scotland's Sunday Mail newspaper in October, he said, "Investing in a sports team has been something I have been looking at for a long time; if the chance came to invest in Celtic, I would be crazy not to take a look at it.
"I have watched so much soccer in Europe but I have never seen fans like the Celtic fans. There is something so special about them."
And the Drop It Like It's Hot hitmaker also approves of the Glasgow club's mascot. He added, "Their mascot is a hound—you couldn’t make that up. Snoop Dogg becomes Hoopy the Hound—that’s gotta be a match made in heaven. The headlines write themselves."
But Snoop may not be the only US rapper set to invest in a UK-based football team.
Last October, Rihanna's boyfriend A$AP Rocky (13/8) was linked with a shock swoop for League Two club Tranmere Rovers, and it's thought Kim Kardashian (2/1) or Dwayne 'The Rock' Johnson (5/2) might also be looking across the pond for a sports investment opportunity soon.
When speaking about American celebrity investment in football league clubs in Britain, football investment expert Adam Sommerfeld recently told BBC's Monday Night Club: "Now it becomes about almost how can you take it up a level. Who's going to get The Rock, god forbid who's going to get a Kim Kardashian?"
What's more, a video of US acting legend Danny DeVito recently went viral after a Wrexham game. He was in a bar in Los Angeles watching the Welsh side, to support his It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia colleague Rob McElhenney, when Wrexham grabbed a late winner against Barnsley, and Danny started high-fiving fellow US-based fans.
He is 3/1 to take his support to the next level by investing in a UK football club, while Everton fan and Hollywood action hero Sylvester Stallone is 4/1 to do so, and Aston Villa fan and movie icon Tom Hanks is a 6/1 chance.
