A former bank building occupied by Santander may be changed into a gambling site if planners approve the application.

The empty bank is located in North London and may become one of dozens of gambling sites in the borough.

Brent Council will consider the application but has also been calling for changes to gambling laws due to what they perceive as companies repeatedly submitting applications for slots and bingo halls.

Residents Raise Concerns Over Growing Number

The application has been made by Merkur Slots for premises at 265 Neasden Lane, Neasden. Local residents voiced their opposition on the blog Wembley Matters.

Many argue that the area, already facing medium to high levels of deprivation, does not need another gambling establishment. Comments highlight fears that a casino would exacerbate existing issues, with one resident suggesting that a gym would be a more beneficial addition, promoting health and well-being instead of addiction.

One resident posted: “We do not need another gambling place in Neasden. This would be detrimental to the area, which is already run down.”

Another posted: “It would be much better to have a gym, encourage people to get healthy and feel better about themselves. Casinos just support addiction and destroy lives.”

One commentator said: “We have 3 x Silvertime (2 within 50 ft of each other) and 1 x Merkur in Wembley High Road and that does not include all the betting shops, of which there are at least 6-8 and 2 Paddy Power, so I'm not thinking that the Brent Council gives a toss about what shops they allow to open as long as they are getting the business rates.”

Merkur Slots Commited to Social Responsibility

Similar to neighbouring areas like Willesden and Harlesden, Neasden's struggles with deprivation have led to comparisons with Harlesden being dubbed the 'Las Vegas of Britain' due to the high concentration of gambling sites there. Critics feel that such establishments prey on vulnerable communities.

In response to safety and ethical concerns, Merkur Slots, the company behind the proposal, emphasised that their venues are strictly restricted to adults and have measures in place to obscure the interior and prevent child-targeted advertising.

Additionally, the company highlighted its commitment to social responsibility, stating that staff are trained to identify and assist vulnerable customers while acknowledging the challenges of operating in an area facing social issues.

Most of my career was spent in teaching including at one of the UK’s top private schools. I left London in 2000 and set up home in Wales raising four beautiful children. I enrolled at University where I studied Photography and film and gained a Degree and subsequently a Masters Degree. In 2014 I helped launch a new local newspaper and managed to get front and back page as well as 6 filler pages on a weekly basis. I saw that journalism was changing and was a pioneer of hyperlocal news in Wales. In 2017 I started one of the first 24/7 free independent news sites for Wales. Having taken that to a successful business model I was keen for a new challenge. Joining the company is exciting for me especially as it is a new role in Europe. I am keen to establish myself and help others to do the same.
