In recent weeks, significant work has been undertaken at the empty building on Bridge Street, with new signage indicating its future as a bingo lounge by Shipleys. This site, located at the corner of Queens Street and next to an existing Shipleys slots and bingo, has been repurposed by the gambling company to expand its offerings.

Planning Application Aligns with Recent Trends in the Gaming Industry

After receiving approval from Swindon Borough Council, Shipleys plans to transform the adjacent vacant unit into a bingo lounge, a concept that aligns with recent trends in the gaming industry. The new space is designed to recreate the classic bingo hall experience, featuring screens, an expansive area for seating, and tables for online bingo enthusiasts.

While gaming machines including electronic versions of roulette, blackjack, and slots will still be available, they will be relocated to a smaller area at the rear of the establishment.

A spokesperson for Shipleys noted, “This development presents an opportunity to engage with the existing and emerging economy, contributing to the revitalization of central Swindon. Our aim is to provide a commercial establishment that boosts local employment and supports the borough's economic prosperity."

Council Green Lights Expansion of Betting Shop

The plans for the bingo lounge were given the green light by the local council as they represent an expansion of one of the four existing betting shops in the town centre, rather than increasing the overall count of gambling establishments.

Indeed, Swindon Borough Council has policies aimed at limiting the proliferation of gambling venues, particularly in the town’s main areas.

A council spokesperson stated, “The new proposal will replace an established adult gaming centre operating from part of these premises. Therefore, the number of betting and gambling outlets in this area will remain at four, with the unique characteristics of the bingo lounge distinguishing it from other establishments.”

Building had Been Vacant for Two Years

As work progresses, promotional banners have appeared around the building, advertising it as a forthcoming Shipleys slots and bingo venue. A large wooden hoarding outside hints at the exciting developments, and there’s also a sign pointing to the existing Shipleys, which operates 24 hours.

The evolution of bingo halls into multi-purpose gaming lounges reflects a wider shift in the industry, where traditional bingo experiences are being enhanced to attract a broader audience.

This repurposing mirrors trends seen in the wider gambling landscape, showcasing a response to the growing demand for immersive and engaging gaming environments.
