If you’ve ever taken a buffalo-themed slot for a spin before, you will have a rough idea of what to expect from 5 Wild Buffalo. The reels are positioned next to a canyon, while intricate Native American carvings border the grid. I particularly liked the addition of the two bird sculptures at either end of the grid. 

The symbols feature animals that roam those lands, including a horse, a wolf, a lioness, and, of course, the buffalo. 

The base game for 5 Wild Buffalo sticks to a fairly conventional set-up. There are five reels and four rows, with 1,024 ways to win on each spin. Wins are formed by landing three or more matching symbols anywhere on the reels, providing it starts on the leftmost reel. 

I found the game to be easy to use, with everything you need being laid out clearly under the reels. Likewise, I had no issues when playing it on a mobile device. 

There are 5 Wild Buffalo bonus features to win, and the game provides the chance to win five jackpots. 

You will notice that jackpots are displayed above each reel – the Mini, Midi, Super, Mega, and Ultra. These are worth 8-100x, 12,200x, 100-500x, Mega - 300-1,500x, and 1,000-5,000x, respectively. Whenever you land a Diamond on the reels, it adds value to its respective jackpot. The Diamonds are also added to the Fortune Wheel, which runs to the left of the game grid. 

The Diamond Symbols may also spin the Fortune Prize wheel, which gives you the chance to win one of the jackpots. When a jackpot has been won, the prizes above the reels reset. 

You should also keep your eyes peeled for the big Buffalo symbols. When these land, they can land and display a number between 5x and 10x. This is not a traditional multiplier. Instead, the symbol will expand, and the display number will count for the number of symbols that it represents. 

The other bonus round is the 5 Wild Buffalo Free Spins. These are triggered when you land three or more Scatters. Three, four, or five Scatters will trigger eight, 15, or 25 spins, respectively. During the round, Wilds expand to fill their reels and display a value between 6x and 12x for the number of symbols they represent.

I tested the 5 Wild Buffalo slot on my laptop and iPhone. The game worked great on both, with the fairly-simple design having no problems transitioning onto the smaller screen. The additional side wheel makes the game feel a little cramped on a mobile, but it is not a major issue and doesn’t impact gameplay.

The betting range is $0.20 to $20, which I found a little limited, especially given that the game does not provide huge winning potential, especially in the base game. I found the standard symbol combinations to offer very low wins. 

5 Wild Buffalo has a good, but not great, math model. The slot is rated as highly volatile, which was definitely reflected in my own playing experience. The RTP is 96.01%, which puts it just above average, and the maximum win is 7,500x your stake, which is fairly solid but not huge for a jackpot slot. 

5 Wild Buffalo is a solid but fairly unspectacular entry into the buffalo-themed slot genre. The slot serves up some okay action, with the expanding symbols and free spins leading to some engaging moments and the chance for good wins. 

The highly volatile nature of the game means that there were plenty of slower sequences, especially in the base game, but when the game kicks in, there are some good wins to be had. Overall, the game feels very reliant on the bonuses to keep players engaged, and the lack of huge wins can make it feel like a bit of an endurance test.
