Book of Evil Slot Review

Nearly any developer has some kind of a "Book of…" slot in its portfolio. Yggdrasil held on long enough until the release of Book of Evil. Created in collaboration with SpinOn, the slot doesn’t follow all the "Book of…" trends. While the gameplay is certainly familiar, the theme is set as far away from ancient Egypt as possible.

Once you fire it up, you’ll see what it’s all about. Set in a graveyard, this is a horror slot with a peculiar book of evil in the lead role. The spine-chilling journey may scare some players off, but it’ll be a delight for horror fans. Fans of "Book of…" video slots will love it too. The slot does some welcome changes to the expansion symbols, adding them to the base game in addition to expansions in the bonus round.

What makes the slot most impressive is the eerie atmosphere and the simple gameplay. It’s a no-fuss slot machine with decent winning potential, thanks to the highly volatile math model with 10 paylines. If you want to learn more, read my Book of Evil review below.

Book of Evil Slot Layout, Theme, and Setup

Book of Evil doesn’t reinvent the wheel when it comes to setup and design. It’s a 5x3 reel set with some creepy characters on the reels. These symbols are displayed in their regular and dark roles. While it seems like the two icons for each symbol may do something different, they don’t. I guess the developers liked both icons, so it included both.

The action takes place in the dark of night on a spooky graveyard. The studio has done a great job setting up an eerie atmosphere that perfectly suits the dark design. Overall, it’s a very pleasing slot from a horror aesthetic.

If you like horror slots, you’ll love the spooky atmosphere in Book of Evil.

How to Play the Book of Evil Slot

You must place a bet between 20c and $50 per spin to start playing the Book of Evil slot. Once you’ve made your pick, click the spin button on the right to begin. You can choose up to 100 automatic spins if you want to. The action gets going right away, with three or more symbols required for a win.

The titular book plays the role of a scatter and a wild. As a wild, it can substitute for any other symbol in a winning combination. Five wilds pay the largest returns of 400x the bet. That’s a payout match for the sinister-looking priest.

And now for the surprise. While most "Book of…" online slots feature symbol expansions in the bonus round, this one brings that feature to the base game as well. Any symbol except for the book can be chosen as a random expander before each spin. The expanding symbols don’t need to be adjacent to each other for a win. But, in order for them to expand, there’s a required number of symbols – that’s 3+ for low-paying symbols and 2+ for premiums.

Other than that, there’s no other special feature in the base game. There’s a free spins round which follows mostly the same action.

Book of Evil Slot Free Spins, Bonus Features & Bonus Buy

Book of Evil’s free spins round is a familiar sight. It’s triggered by three or more book scatters, which award ten free spins. Any of the regular symbols are once again chosen as the expander. If the required number of scatters lands on the reels during the bonus, they will cover their respective reels.

Retriggers are possible if you land three or more scatters and award ten more spins. You can also buy your way into the bonus round for 100x the bet.

My Experience Playing the Book of Evil Slot for Real Money

Despite the fact that the setting is a welcome change, the gameplay in Book of Evil is far too familiar. Yes, there’s an expander in the base game, too, but that’s not that big of a change to the gameplay. As a result, I can say it’s a bit boring, although the expanding symbols can offer decent wins across the board.

I managed to get premium symbol expanding wins a few times, and the payouts were decent. Unfortunately, the high volatility prevented me from reaching the bonus round in a decent number of spins. I eventually paid for the free spins bonus round, but it didn’t return the investment. Overall, it’s an OK slot, but not that different from other "Book of…" real cash online slots except for the theme.

Book of Evil Slot Verdict and Recommended Games

If you like horror slots, you’ll love the spooky atmosphere in Book of Evil. There’s not much change when it comes to the gameplay. The only difference is the random expanding symbols in the base game, which is also special in the bonus round. It's not that much to make a difference, but it can still pay decent.

If you’re more into ancient mythologies, you have to try the Book of the Dead slot. It’s the original "Book of…" slot and the one many others have drawn inspiration from. For something a bit more innovative and fun to play, try Yggdrasil’s Valley of the Gods 2.
