The Flames of Egypt casino slot game is another homage to the era of Great Egypt. A time when houses were triangular, rivers were red, and pharaohs were wearing McQueen before McQueen ever existed. 

Now, by looking at this game, you would assume that this came out somewhere between 1999 and 2009. You would, however, be wrong. Try not to faint when I reveal that Flames of Egypt was only released in 2019. This is what Merkur does. All their games look decades old and, frankly, play the same way as well. 

The slot layout comes with a 3-row, 5-reel, and 20 paylines on the grid. When the game loads, the payline patterns are instantly overlaid on the grid for you to see how to form a win. To be fair, it’s like looking at an underground rail map that makes no sense. 

The symbols of the game feature the classic characters you would expect. You have the gods Ra and Set, there is the Eye of Horus, a Pharoah, and a cross, which all make up the high-prized symbols. The low ones are the 9, 10, J, Q, K, and A symbols.

The scarab beetle symbol is the slot’s scatter or bonus symbol. It should be noted that the Pharoah symbol also acts as the game’s Wild symbol. 

Flames of Egypt is as basic as a slot machine comes. When you load Flames of Egypt, be it in its free demo mode or as a real money casino game, the first thing you do is check the default bet price, which is the single cost of a spin. By selecting the coin stack icon button, you can change the default price per spin to suit your budget. When you have set the limit, you start spinning the reels by pressing the green play button. The auto play button is next to this, which plays unlimited auto spins.

To be fair, there is another feature on the game, but it’s one that opens up a new side game. The Gamble feature is available as an optional side game after every win that is made (note: the feature is inactive when you play in autoplay mode). You can gamble your winnings by playing a very simple card game. This feature is exactly what makes this game old-school. This was a huge feature 20 years ago, but Merkur refuses to shake it from their games. 

My experiences with Merkur games tend to be brief. This way, I avoid death by boredom. I’ve said this many times across many Merkur reviews: their games come with zero substance and look terrible. I don’t like to be mean, but when it comes to player interests, there are far better games on the market to put your money in. 

As with every Merkur game I review, I set my betting limit, selected the autoplay, and left the room. As I couldn’t set the number of spins I wanted to play, I just gave the game 10 minutes, and I returned. At this time, I didn’t land any bonus feature, but I was up on my demo fun coin balance.  Yes, damned if I was going to play this game with real money.  

Flames of Egypt comes with an RTP score that is 96.47%. The volatility setting is set to high, which adds to the boredom of playing this game. When high-volatility programming appears in a game, it becomes a costly and dull experience. 

The maximum payout of this game is 5,000 times the value you pay to spin. So, the more you gamble, the greater the potential return will be. Given the max you can spend on a spin is $10, this makes the jackpot $50,000.

As a casino game, it’s not great. If you compare this to any other casino slot released in 2019, it falls well short of the standards you’d expect. It’s a bit sad when a developer shows no evolution in their games and ideas. 

Sure, the game is fairly good value for money. At a max bet of $10 and the chance to win $50,000, it’s pretty good. The problem with this is the high volatility, which makes it harder to win.
