The Rabid Randy slot has a peculiar layout where, aside from base game symbols, you can land special paw symbols that turn into active frames (animal traps) and potentially transform into wilds on the next spin. Paws also pile up on the counter and contribute to a progressive free spins multiplier, which can reach a whopping 1,000x.

Rabid Randy features five reels with a 3-4-5-4-3 row format and 20 fixed paylines. To win, you must match three or more symbols across one of the paylines starting from the leftmost reel. The symbols include typical low-paying card royals and high-paying rabid animals, with the bear being the most valuable. Rabid Randy himself is the scatter, appearing only on the middle reels.

The game has a very high volatility, so you won’t get much from matching base game symbols. Even if you land five bears in a payline, you’ll only win five times your bet.

The paw symbol serves a special purpose. Whenever it lands, it leaves a frame shaped like a trap in its position for future spins. The paw can randomly turn into a “Hot Paw,” which becomes a wild on the next spin. In that case, all the trap-shaped frames adjacent to that active frame turn into wilds, as well.

Each paw you land fills up the collect meter. When it lands outside of a trap-shaped frame, it adds one point to the meter, and when it appears inside one, it can add anywhere from one to four points. When the meter reaches 200, it upgrades the multiplier, which is later applied to the free spins round. The maximum multiplier is 1,000x.

To get to the free spins round, you must land three scatters (Rabid Randy symbols), and you start off with three free spins. All trap symbols that didn’t turn into wilds on the spin in which you triggered the bonus game are transformed into random trophy symbols that show values of between 0.5x and 50x your bet, while all other positions remain empty. 

With each free spin, a new trophy symbol can appear on one of the empty spaces, and if it does, it remains in place until the end of the round. Every new symbol that lands resets the free spin counter back to three, and the game ends only when no new trophies appear for three consecutive plays. All the values from all trophy symbols are then added together to determine your total prize.

I had lots of fun playing Rabid Randy. The slot has a quirky and enjoyable theme, crisp graphics and soundtrack, and original mechanics that I haven’t seen in many other games, even at top online casinos. This is my honest opinion, despite the fact I wasn’t very lucky during my session.

I like the collector feature, as it makes you feel as if you’re progressing to something, even on spins where you don’t win anything. Still, I think that the 200-point threshold for increasing the multiplier is a tad high. I only got to 200 points about 15 minutes into my gameplay, and it merely increased the multiplier from 1x to 2x. I then finally triggered the free spins game and won just around 15x my bet.

In total, I spent about 45 minutes playing the game and lost around $80 while wagering $2 per spin. Still, this could be me just getting unlucky on that day. Rabid Randy has a fairly average RTP and a massive max win potential, so you can legitimately land a huge prize when things turn out right.
