The Aztec theme in online slots is not as common as you may think. So, when games like the Temple of Tollan come along, you’re like, “Oh.” Many of you might be wondering who the Tollans were.
As none of you will even bother to do your research, I may as well spare you the simple Google search. The Tollan were an ancient Aztec tribe that invented the automatic car wash, as in the big machine that cleans your vehicle, not the hands-on soap and water approach, which inspired the Car Wash song by Rose Royce in 1976.
Now that we are up to speed with history let’s dive into the game. In this review, I share my experience playing Temple of Tollan as an online real money casino game. I also discuss the gaming performance and software programming, speak about the design and bonus features, and provide alternative recommendations.
This slot review includes a free demo of this game. You can play Temple of Tollan on any mobile device, and at the end of this review, you will find the best casinos hosting this game.
The Temple of Tollan slot by Play’n GO is a monumental game by design. Set in a temple with snarling statues of dog-like beasts, the hostility of the game is muted by the relaxing and ceremonial panpipe music.
To the right of the reels is a Tollan spirit warrior or early door-to-door salesman—your guess is as good as mine. He appears in a veil of smoke and has pawed feet like a dog, so he possibly works in sales.
This character comes with animated movements and will engage with what happens on the slot. As the game picks up through wins, the panpipe sounds evolve into some synth-pop electro-future sound, possibly produced by 80s music icon Brian Eno.
The slot's layout provides a 7-row by 7-reel game with a tumbling feature and a Cluster Pays mechanism.
I like the calming music of this game, and I liked it even more when I won with my 7th and 8th spins.
On the face of it, Temple of Tollan looks like it would be a complicated game. But all slots come with the same functions, so fear not. Once you have loaded the casino game, adjust the default betting price to suit your gaming budget. Use the + and – buttons on the control panel to navigate between the minimum wagering price of $0.10 and the maximum bet of $100.
You can now begin to play with your bet set. Press the green Spin button or the orange Autoplay button to start. As this is a Tumbler game, symbols do not rotate on a reel. Instead, they drop off the reels and fall into the game from above. It’s also known as a Cascade. This motion of play means that wins must be formed by clusters of 4 or more matching symbols.
When a win is produced, these symbols are removed from the reels, and in their place, the symbols above drop down. New symbols are simultaneously dropped into the now-empty spaces to fill the slot. This can produce whole new clusters, and in such instances, consecutive wins can be formed from one ‘spin.’
Proceed to play by repeatedly pressing the spin button. The game will conclude when you have either lost your funds or won enough to cash out and quit.
Special Symbols: Before each spin is played, there are 5 special symbols on the slot. These come with lives [1 to 3]. A life is lost when they are next to a winning cluster. When all lives are gone, the symbol gets destroyed and activates a feature.
Multiplier: The multiplier feature can increase wins by x1, x2, x3, and x4. The total multiplier value it can reach is x50.
Cross: This destroys all symbols within the cross pattern of where it lands on the reels.
Destroy: This has the power to remove symbols that are not in a cluster and still count them as a win.
Transform: This has the power to change symbols, which might lead to clusters being formed.
Wilds: The Wild symbol can replicate 2 to 6 other wilds on the reels to help boost winning potential.
Free Spins: If you destroy 5 Special Symbols, you will win 4 free spins, all of which guarantee a winning return. The multiplier also gets carried into the bonus games and doesn’t reset. All Special Symbols act as sticky symbols, so will remain in place throughout all free spins. If you destroy 5 Special Symbols in the bonus game, you will re-trigger 4 free spins.
I am all for Play’n GO slots. They kick-ass (most of the time), and I have no qualms with Aztec-style games, and they aren’t as mass-produced as other slot machine themes.
I found the game in my casino and loaded it. I set my bet to my standard price of $2 per spin and played 50 automated spins.
I like the calming music of this game, and I liked it even more when I won with my 7th and 8th spins. I then triggered the Multiply feature, followed by the Transport feature, which led to a Big Win of $27. This action changed the music to some weird drum and bass dance track.
A few spins later, the Cross feature was activated, which helped keep my balance in the green. Each time the features hit, the animated salesman speaks and levitates to activate them. In short, a lot of crazy things went on, and I was able to cash out $16.80.
It was a great experience with a lot of immersive qualities.
Temple of Tollan is a high volatility slot, which is not something I would say I experienced. It played more like a medium volatility game. The RTP is 96.20%. The max payout is 15,000 times what you bet. If you spend $100 per spin, the max jackpot would be $1,500,000!
To be fair, Play’n GO has created a very good game. It comes with the spoils of several features. The gameplay was laced with lots of action, and yeah, there is nothing to fault this game on.

The slot game comes with a calculated Return to Player score of 96.20 percent. While the RTP is purely a probability rate, the reality is that all wins are done by chance and luck. 96.20% is average, but it is not definite.
