An Insight into the Production of the World's Finest Roulette Wheels and Table Gaming Displays

Cammegh Limited markets itself as a producer of the world’s finest roulette wheels and table gaming displays with its precision-engineered and highly-customizable innovations featuring in casinos from Macau and Brisbane to Monte Carlo and Las Vegas. The British firm established by Bill Cammegh in 1989 today has over 30 employees and also offers a complete array of spares and accessories alongside its Argon game result analysis and asset management software for roulette and baccarat.

Casinos.com spoke with the Ashford-headquartered company’s Sales Director, Andrew Cammegh, about his company’s humble beginnings, its range of casino products and its upcoming appearance at ICE Barcelona.

Andrew Cammegh

Cammegh Limited was established by your father, Bill, from a small garage in the Kent village of Bethersden. What was behind this move and how were the first products received?

My father is a chartered mechanical engineer and he specialized in the manufacture and design of machine tools. By chance, an opportunity presented itself in 1989 for him to produce a chip tray for Technical Casino Supplies. Given his precision engineering background and attention to detail, the resulting product was typically beautifully engineered, far exceeding the demands of such a simple component. When delivering the chip tray, he was invited to look around the showroom where a roulette wheel immediately caught his eye.

He was subsequently offered the chance to manufacture a pair of roulette wheels for Technical Casino Supplies. In just eight weeks, starting with a blank piece of paper, he delivered the roulette wheels and on the strength of the samples, Technical Casino Supplies ordered 25 more, which he duly built with the help of my brother, Richard, who is now the Managing Director of Cammegh Limited. Today, it typically takes us longer than eight weeks to manufacture a roulette wheel given the volume we produce, and this is with all the tools, know-how and procedures already established. So, for him to make two in only eight weeks from scratch was and remains a remarkable achievement.

From that moment, my parents decided they were going to manufacture the best roulette wheels in the world, which has remained our mission up to the present day.

From those humble beginnings, your company is now renowned around the world for producing innovative roulette wheels. What do you believe are the reasons behind this success?

We’ve been doing this for 35 years and during this time we’ve developed a genuine depth of knowledge. Understanding the product itself, the varying environments in which the product will be used and then understand the materials and processes required to produce it. It is this level of understanding that is required to build the very best, fit for purpose roulette wheels. When you keep your focus dedicated and narrow, it is possible to become and establish your position as the best in the world, in our case, producing the best roulette wheels in the world.

We were confident this investment would pay off once we were able to develop relationships and demonstrate the merits of our products and this has proven to be true.

We have now been able to achieve success as casino operators are able to see the extra levels of engineering, attention to detail and innovation and other factors such as how well our roulette wheels perform in the arid climate of Nevada. We now have a support infrastructure in Las Vegas and can meet the demands of this market with the pairing of our very high-quality roulette wheels and displays being extremely well received and supported.

Your roulette wheels and displays are also available to casino operators in Macau, New Zealand, Australia and several Canadian provinces including British Columbia and Ontario. What do you see as the main differences between these and the United States or your home market of the United Kingdom?

One large historical difference is that operators in the United States have enjoyed the additional house edge generated by the ‘double zero’. In the past, their game speed was often slower and I wondered if the increased house edge somehow contributed to this. However, this has changed as operators see the benefit of both increased margin and game speed. There are also varying technical specifications and some cosmetic differences too.

I have seen roulette grow in popularity and it is increasingly being seen much less as an also-ran or tertiary gaming product, which is great to see. The simplicity in the way roulette is played and the way it caters for varying budgets and risk levels has captured the imagination of Americans and it is today considered to be an essential part of the gaming mix in much the same way as it is in the United Kingdom, Europe and parts of Asia and Australasia.

Your products are utilized by casino operators in established markets such as Nevada and the United Kingdom but what new or emerging markets are you most interested or excited about potentially entering?

There are several emerging markets including parts of South America and Asia. We are very interested in the potential Japan will offer as a casino market. While that might be some time off, we are here for the long term with a high quality and experienced approach to making roulette wheels that I believe lends itself to casino operators in emerging jurisdictions. I believe the Japanese market, for example, will be looking to buy the best and establish themselves in what is a very sophisticated global gaming market.

You will be exhibiting your wide range of products at Spain’s Fira Barcelona Gran Via from January 20 to 22 as part of ICE Barcelona. What can attendees expect to see on your stand?

Our footprint will be the exactly same as it was for the previous ICE shows in London although we will have a new stand design. The way we exhibit our products will be consistent with how we’ve done so in the past and visitors will be able to check out all of our outstanding innovations including the Slingshot range of roulette wheels and our Billboard Display System.

We have been reassured by the organizer that the show is going to be well attended and we hope this is the case. Visitors will be greeted with the traditionally warm welcome they have enjoyed from Cammegh Limited over many years and we look forward to sharing with visitors our exciting plans for 2025.

What one innovation are you most looking forward to showcasing at the exhibition in Barcelona?

The Slingshot roulette wheel is such a fantastic product and we are looking forward to showcasing it at ICE Barcelona. It is a real workhorse as well as a real demonstration of form and function working in perfect harmony. It is an engineering marvel with few moving parts and unique characteristics such as the ball being on display at all times. I never tire of showing it to customers, both new and established. But I am also very excited at how well our security-focussed Mercury 360 RRS wheel is performing, something I am looking forward to sharing with our customers.
