In the words of that great singer-songwriter Seal, ‘loneliness is the killer.’

If you happen to be lucky enough to attend the Colne Citadel, then you may feel a little less lonely, especially at one of their weekly bingo sessions, which are aimed at tackling loneliness.

The sessions were under threat because of a lack of funding but now the building society has come to the rescue.

The Marsden Building Society has stepped up with a whopping £2,990 grant fund to fund Colne Citadel’s Over 50’s bingo and tackle social isolation and loneliness.

Generous Donation Will Help Tackle Loneliness

Jolene Cooper, assistant centre manager at Colne Citadel, was thrilled with the financial support.

Cooper said, "We’re a charity community centre and this generous donation will help support our aim to reduce social isolation and improve well-being."

It is hoped the fund will enable the continuation of the winter months sessions and provide a ‘fun, social activity.’

Building Society Grants Having Impact in Lancashire

The sessions have a real impact on people’s lives, with around 32 people participating every week. As well as the bingo, people get hot meals, hot and cold drinks and desserts.

Since its launch in 2023, Marsden Building Society's charitable foundation has awarded 22 grants totalling over £60,000. The foundation focuses on supporting projects in Lancashire that align with its three key themes: financial well-being, societal inclusion, and the environment.

Rob Pheasey, the Chief Executive at Marsden Building Society, agrees, "It’s a pleasure to support Colne Citadel in providing a valuable and popular activity for over 50s living in our area.

"By providing a welcoming and inclusive space, these bingo sessions offer attendees the opportunity to connect with others, engage in enjoyable activities, and experience a sense of belonging.

"This initiative aligns with Marsden’s aim to give back to the communities we serve and make a positive impact on the lives of our neighbours."

As well as bingo sessions, the Citadel offers Knit and Natter, the MenKind male support group, a low-cost café, arts and crafts, and booked counselling appointments throughout the day.

Most of my career was spent in teaching including at one of the UK’s top private schools. I left London in 2000 and set up home in Wales raising four beautiful children. I enrolled at University where I studied Photography and film and gained a Degree and subsequently a Masters Degree. In 2014 I helped launch a new local newspaper and managed to get front and back page as well as 6 filler pages on a weekly basis. I saw that journalism was changing and was a pioneer of hyperlocal news in Wales. In 2017 I started one of the first 24/7 free independent news sites for Wales. Having taken that to a successful business model I was keen for a new challenge. Joining the company is exciting for me especially as it is a new role in Europe. I am keen to establish myself and help others to do the same.
