It’s a shocking statistic to hear at this time of year, and we hate to be the bearers of bad news, but we’ll do it anyway: almost half of Brits will give up on their New Year’s Resolution before the end of January.
But we’re still firing on all cylinders when it comes to setting those resolutions in the first place. Whether it’s a personal goal to work towards, or something more general, finder.com says that about 74% of Brits will set a New Year’s Resolution this year.
We’d regard ourselves as pretty standard, run-of-the-mill people, and our resolutions include “go to the gym”, “eat more veggies”, and “spend less time on social media”. We'd love to win more money playing slots, but look at our name, you can hardly be surprised.
But how does that really compare to the rest of the UK? Do people want to save money this year? Learn to cook? Or maybe stop smoking?
Our research and analytics team at Casinos.com decided to go on a mission to find out what the most popular New Year’s Resolutions for the UK are in 2025, based on search volume.

You might not be at all surprised to hear that the most popular New Year’s Resolution in the UK actually ties in perfectly with one of ours: it’s “weight loss”, which was searched for 41,000 times. It showed an increase of 1.07% compared to the previous year. The same resolution, just phrased slightly differently, also came in at third place, where “lose weight” received 6,600 searches.
Second on the list was “mindfulness”, which received a healthy 28,000 searches, although this was down 3.4% on the previous year. Many people set mindfulness as their New Year’s Resolution as a way to improve overall mental health.
Another resolution which is always popular is giving up smoking. Coming in at fourth place, stopping smoking received 5,400 searches, but this was actually down -1.23% on the previous year. And we think we know why. It’s being replaced by another, similar resolution: giving up vaping. 1,300 searches were made for “stop vaping”, an increase of 3.46% on last year.
Statistics now say that about 5.6 million Brits vape, while about 6 million smoke, so although vaping isn’t more popular just yet, it’s showing a marked increase over the years. But who knows, maybe those stats will be way down by 2026, if everyone sticks with their resolutions.
Would you believe that a top five resolution in the UK is to “win money”?
If you do happen to be one of the 5,000 people in the UK who searched for this recently, we might just be able to help you with our list of the best casino sites in the UK. And if you do get lucky enough to cross this resolution off your list, it would be great if you decided to share the jackpot with us!
So, we’ve seen which resolutions became more popular this year, but one in particular actually fell off a cliff. Can you guess what it is? Come on, we bet you can. Yes, indeed, while there were still 350 searches for “meet new people”, it dropped by a whopping -23.59%.
Perhaps the residual effects of being stuck at home during lockdown led to an increase the previous year, or perhaps we’ve finally embraced the fact that we’d all rather stay home and drink tea and watch Netflix than bother to go out and meet people. We don’t know about you, but we certainly have enough friends already (and we don’t even really like them).
What else don’t Brits really care about this year? Surprisingly, precious few financial goals made it onto the list. While “save money” came in at ninth place with 2,200 searches (down 0.29% on last year), searches for “get a raise” were insignificant, around 10 people a month. In the face of the ongoing Cost of Living Crisis, we would have expected to see more financial or career-related goals for 2025.
How does your resolution compare with others in the UK? Are you surprised at the results? As for us, we can’t wait to revisit our research in another year, to see what’s popular amongst Brits going into 2026.
Casinos.com utilised online tools Ahrefs and Semrush to analyse search trends in the UK for various resolutions. We looked for searches of certain keywords and ranked them based on which had the most searches for the month of December heading into the New Year.
