Colorado is considered an outdoor paradise with stunning mountain ranges and sweeping landscapes. In fact, it is one of the Mountain states, sharing the Four Corners region with Arizona, New Mexico, and Utah.

But in a state that has so much going on outdoors, is there still a demand for casinos? Well the answer is yes. There are three gambling towns with commercial casinos and a couple of tribal casinos too.

The good news for gamblers is that as of Spring 2021, betting restrictions have been removed. Before that, the maximum bet in Colorado was $100 state-wide, but casinos can now set their own limits giving players a lot more flexibility.

Colorado Land-Based Casino Operators

Gambling in Colorado can be found in three main towns – Black Hawk, Central City and Cripple Creek while tribal casinos are located in Ignacio and Towaoc.

Black Hawk is considered the main casino hub with a dozen casinos and some of the biggest and best ones too. Some well-known casino operators own or run properties in Colorado such as:

  • Caesars Entertainment – one of the most famous mega-casinos operators in the US, they operate two Colorado casinos - Horseshoe Black Hawk and Lady Luck Casino Black Hawk
  • Bally’s – another big name in US casinos, Bally’s operate three casinos in Colorado – Bally’s Black Hawk North, West and East along with 20 other properties across the country such as Bally’s Atlantic City
  • Penn Entertainment – operate Ameristar Casino Resort Spa in Black Hawk. Penn are a big player in US gaming operating 43 properties over 20 states including other Ameristar casinos and a range of Hollywood Casinos too.
  • Monarch Casino & Resort Inc – operate Monarch Casino Resort Spa in Black Hawk as well as Atlantic Casino Resort Spa in Reno, Nevada

Colorado Casino Resorts

There are over 30 casino resorts in Colorado, but let’s just take a brief look at three of the biggest.

  • Monarch Casino Resort Spa – The largest casino in Colorado, this 60,000 square foot gaming floor has over 1,000 slots, 40 live table games, high limit gaming, keno and a designated poker room. The 500-room hotel offers a beautiful rooftop pool area, luxury spa, and several dining options too.
  • Ameristar Casino Resort Spa – Themed on a rustic mountain scene, this casino reminds me of the Rocky Mountain Railway Ride at Disneyworld. The two-story casino has distinct features such as skylight ceilings, slate floors, timber beams, and massive stone fireplaces and you can enjoy over 900 slots, 40 table games and 22 poker tables. There’s also a separate Baccarat parlor. With just over 500 rooms, the resort gives panoramic views of the Rocky Mountains, as well as a pool, spa and several eateries.
  • Horseshoe Black Hawk – Once the biggest casino resort in Black Hawk, Horseshoe brings that expected Caesars style and standards to Colorado. The 42,400-square foot gaming floor features 27 live tables with all the classic games and over 900 slot machines. There’s also a designated poker room and a high limit Video Poker bar too. There are around 240 rooms in the hotel, several restaurants and bars as well as a skywalk that takes you straight to Caesars other Colorado casino Lady Luck.

More Than Gambling

If you’re visiting Colorado, there’s so much to enjoy and experience while you’re there. So don’t spend all your time in the casinos, make sure you leave time for other highlights such as:

  • National Parks – Take your pick, or why not go see them all? The Rocky Mountain National Park, Garden of the Gods, Great Sand Dunes National Park and the Black Canyon of the Gunnison National Park all give completely different ways to experience Colorado and take in the amazing sights and wildlife too.
  • Outdoor Adventures – Name any outdoor activity and you can probably do it in Colorado. From winter sports such as skiing and snowboarding in Aspen to hiking, white water rafting, mountain biking, hot air ballooning, rock climbing, sand boarding or even just stargazing.
  • Unique Experiences – If you like something different then why not check out an Old Ghost Town in abandoned mining towns like St. Elmo, walk along one of the highest suspension bridges in the world at Royal Gorge Bridge & Park or take a scenic train ride through the mountains on the Durango & Silverton Narrow Gauge Railroad

Important Considerations

In Colorado you need to be 21 or over to enter a casino. It is always advisable to bring photographic ID with you on entry.

Colorado state laws prohibit casinos from serving free alcohol in casinos. Alcohol is available but it must be purchased.
