Tom Holland has played Peter Parker/ Spider-Man since making his debut in 2016's Captain America: Civil War, taking over from predecessors Andrew Garfield and Tobey Maguire.

That movie saw Spider-Man make his debut in the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU), which has resulted in Holland's own Spider-Man trilogy, aka the "Home Trilogy", courtesy of 2017's Spider-Man: Homecoming, 2019 movie Spider-Man: Far From Home, and Spider-Man: No Way Home, which was released in 2021.

But the third film in the franchise didn't end well for the webslinger, as the world, including his best pals, forgot his identity.

Holland is expected to reprise his role in Spider-Man 4 - which has yet to have a release date, but it could even be as early as next year - but he doesn't look set to portray the wall-crawler for too much longer.

In 2021, Holland told GQ Magazine: "If I’m playing Spider-Man after I’m 30, I’ve done something wrong."

The actor later clarified those comments in a chat with Extra, saying: "Because I would be taking up an opportunity for someone to come in and change what being Spider-Man means.

"Spider-Man could be more diverse; it could be a female character. It could be anything."

Spider-Man 4 is expected to kick off a new trilogy, and while the Home Trilogy told Spider-Man's origin story, there aren't any concrete details about the next hat-trick of movies.

There are plenty of possibilities regarding a new Spider-Man when Holland eventually hangs up his Spidey suit.

If Marvel decides to go down the retelling route, then the next Spider-Man could be another teenager - Holland was 19 when he debuted as the superhero - but if they go down the established Spider-Man path, then perhaps an older actor could take on the iconic superhero role next?

Holland previously told GQ that "maybe what's best for Spider-Man is that they do a Miles Morales film," and he added to Extra: "I'd like to see Miles."

And off the back of suggesting Spider-Man could in fact be a "female character,"  the actor also hinted that superhero Silk, whose alter-ego is Cindy Moon, could take his place, adding: "I'd like to see Silk."

Moon is no stranger to the MCU.

Tiffany Espensen portrayed her in 2017's Spider-Man: Homecoming and 2018's Avengers: Infinity War - but she has yet to be unveiled as Silk.

The major introductions of either Morales - who is known as Spin - or Silk could potentially occur in Spider-Man 4.

In the comic books, Morales takes over from Peter Parker as Spider-Man after the latter's passing.

The opportunities for the next movie series almost seem endless, which could explain why Marvel is taking their time before revealing any details about Spider-Man 4.

While Holland looks to be sticking around for the next movie, who will replace him afterwards? Or could it even be during?

From Rocketman to Spider-Man?

If the MCU is looking for someone older than Holland to naturally take over the role of Parker/ Spider-Man then Taron Egerton could be their man.

The 34-year-old star is vastly experienced on the big screen, having appeared in the likes of Kingsman: The Secret Service and Rocketman - in which he portrayed Sir Elton John - among many other roles, and he would no doubt do the fly-guy justice.

But after playing such varied roles, he may not want to tie himself up as the webslinger.

Egerton is 6/4 to take on the part next, while Bridgerton's Jonathan Bailey's career seems to be going from strength to strength.

While he is expected to return for the next series of the Netflix hit, that isn't arriving until 2026, so might he find the time to swap his Regency-era attire for a Spidey suit?

The 36-year-old actor is 2/1 for the role, while Happy Valley actor James Norton (5/2) and Poldark's Aidan Turner (3/1) could also be in the conversation.

But if a retelling is in the offing, then the MCU will surely want someone younger, which could provide an opportunity for 6/1 chances Noah Jupe - who is 19, and starred in drama movie Honey Boy - or Shazam! star Asher Angel, who is 21.

One move that could prove popular with some fans of the franchise could even see Garfield (12/1) or Maguire (14/1) reprise their roles for another film series.

In January, it was rumoured the pair were being considered by Sony for Spider-Man 4 appearances, but MCU boss Kevin Feige was said to be keen for the motion picture to be more grounded.

Spin's Time To Shine

While it looks unlikely that Garfield or Maguire will tread old Spider-Man ground, one of Holland's recent suggestions could come to light.

Morales takes over from Parker in the comic books, and they also show how the pair have similar powers after being bitten by spiders, albeit different ones.

Miles Morales in No Way Home

With hints at a Black Spider-Man in 'No Way Home,' could Shameik Moore or Jharrel Jerome portray Miles Morales? (Image: LANDMARK MEDIA / Alamy)

What's more, there was also a huge hint in No Way Home that Morales could be about to become a big player in the next Spider-Man movie.

Towards the end of the motion picture, Jamie Foxx's alter-ego Electro tells Spider-Man: "There's gotta be a Black Spider-Man out there somewhere."

So could be Morales become Spider-Man in the forthcoming film? Holland clearly thinks so, but who could portray him?

If the MCU were to head down a route that saw Morales trained up by Parker for the superhero role, then they would surely be searching for a younger actor to play Spin.

Dallas Dupree Young is just 17 years old and only 7/2 to be the next Spider-Man.

The Cobra Kai star would certainly bring plenty of energy to the role if his role as Kenny in the Netflix series is anything to go by, and the teenager can certainly act.

But he might face strong competition from the likes of black-ish actor Miles Brown (4/1) and Stranger Things star Caleb McLaughlin (4/1) for the role.

If the MCU wanted to stick with previous experience, then Shameik Moore would appear to be a logical pick.

Moore, who is 8/1, has voiced Morales in several animated Spider-Verse movies, but he is 29 years old.

It's a similar story for 9/1 chance Jharrel Jerome, who has character experience after he was revealed to be Miles G. Morales, the Earth-42 version of Morales, in the 2023 animated movie Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse.

And 26-year-old Jerome may just get away with playing a younger Morales.

As well as Holland suggesting Morales could take over as Spider-Man, he also admitted the role could be played by a female actress one day and mentioned Cindy Moon's Silk.

American actress Espensen is 16/1 to maintain the role and go on to be the next Spider-Person, while Game of Thrones actress Jessica Henwick is 18/1 to do so as Silk, and South Korean star Lee Yoo Mi is 20/1.
