Caishen is a mythological figure in Taoism as well as Chinese folk culture. He’s been dubbed the god of luck and wealth, a title that aligns perfectly with many Asian slots. That’s the premise of Caishen Smash, an Octoplay game based on this significant Taoism figure. I’m intentionally saying game instead of a slot because it fits comfortably into the instant game category. It’s also part of the studio’s Smash series, which features other mythology and folk characters in the same scenario.

Caishen Smash is a low-volatile instant game with basic gameplay. It’s all about the cash prizes and multipliers that are displayed on each spin. Maybe round’s a better word instead of a spin. The god of wealth will try to open his scroll on each hit of the spin button, and when it opens up fully, cash prizes will fly toward the spots around him.

Caishen Smash’s layout is easy to read as an instant win game. There are no reels like in slots – everything’s laid out in the center of the screen. Caishen sits in front of a temple high up in the skies, with a gong beneath him, hand fans above, and cash prizes around him.

These cash prizes are transparent. They only light up when Caishen’s scroll flies to them. The game looks excellent visually, and the tranquil Chinese soundtrack sets the perfect tone.

Playing Caishen Smash is a breeze. There are no unnecessary elements on the screen, so it should be easy to start playing right away. The first thing you’ll want to do is place a bet. The minimum is 10c, and the maximum is set to a whopping $1,000. High rollers will surely like this. After adjusting your bet, click on the spin button to get started.

Now, here’s the thing about Caishen Smash – you shouldn’t expect the scroll to open up all the way at all times. When you click on play, it might not open up in full, so you won’t get any prizes, yet the game will subtract the bet from your bankroll. It looks like a glitch, but it isn’t. The game’s guide says that Caishen will try to open the scroll in each round, but whether that happens successfully remains to be seen.

When it does open in full, a few cash prizes (Caishen’s Lucky Wishes) will go to the spots beneath. These range from 0.10x to 20x. If they’re too large—like 20x—they will be displayed as a multiplier.

There are a few special features to make the game more interesting. Right in the center of the prize sector, you’ll see a golden gong. Occasionally, some of the lucky wishes may fly to it. What this does is award up to three multipliers valued at x2, x3, x5, or x20. These multipliers are then randomly awarded to any of the prize sectors, increasing their value.

Remember the hand fans above Caishen? Some lucky wishes may fly there as well.  Each one awards five free smash spins, where gong hits are guaranteed for each round. The feature ends when you run out of extra rounds or hit the max win.

There’s no free spins round or any other special feature. There’s no bonus buy option either, so you can cross your fingers and hope that the god of wealth feels generous during your sessions.

Caishen Smash by Octoplay was a fun and relaxing game. I played it with the default bet of $1 per round and was surprised that the scroll rarely opened during my first ten spins. As I mentioned earlier, it feels like a glitch, but it’s not. When the lucky wishes got out, they offered balanced wins – some smaller, some larger.

I couldn’t hit the gong except for a few times, and it only doubled my wins. The free smash games were not more rewarding either, but they paid decently overall. This isn’t a game designed for big wins, but it’s refreshing to play.

Caishen Smash is a great game if you’re looking to play something less demanding. By less demanding, I mean a game that doesn’t take reading a guide for hours to understand the mechanics as some slots require.
