Mahjong, in all its different variations, is a widely available casino game in and of itself, and Pocket Games Soft has now decided to bring the game to life in a different way. When I first saw the name Mahjong Ways, I assumed it was going to be a new Mahjong variation, but that is not the case. The game is a slot through and through, featuring a Multiplier-based feature and a free spins bonus. Join me as I take the game for a spin in this Mahjong Ways slot review. 

The Mahjong Ways slot game is clearly inspired by the original Chinese game from which it takes its name. In Mahjong, players use tiles to attempt to beat one another, and those same tiles are used as the positions on the game’s reels. The slot uses five reels and four rows, with the titles giving it quite a stylish look. 

The symbols are all traditional Mahjong symbols, and the soundtrack is fairly standard Asian-inspired music. Overall, it’s a simple but effective design that keeps you engaged in the action. 

The game of Mahjong can be quite difficult to play. Thankfully, Mahjong Ways is very much the opposite. I found the slot to have a nice, intuitive design, with all of the buttons I needed to play located under the game grid. 

The Mahjong Ways slot does not use traditional paylines, with 1,024 ways to win active on each spin. Wins are formed when players land matching combinations of three or more across consecutive reels, irrespective of their position. 

It uses a Cascade mechanic, with winning symbols being removed from the game and new ones falling from above. This continues until no new symbols land. 

The first bonus I noticed in the Mahjong Ways slot was the Golden Symbols. These can land on any of the middle three reels. Following a Cascade, any Golden Symbols on the grid that were involved in a win will turn Wild. 

You will also spot the Multiplier trail above the reels. This displays Multipliers of 1x, 2x, 3x, and 5x. On every win and subsequent Cascade, this will increase, and the Multiplier will be automatically applied to any wins. It will reset at the end of a winning sequence. 

Finally, there is the Mahjong Ways Free Spins bonus. This is triggered by landing three or more Scatter symbols on the grid. Players are given an initial 12 spins, with each additional Scatter adding two more spins. During the spins, the Multipliers above the reel increase to 2x, 4x, 6x, and 10x. 

Unfortunately, in the Mahjong Ways slot I tested, there was no option to buy your way into the bonus round. 

I found the Mahjong Ways slot to be a nice and easy online slot to play; the game has a simple design that felt as though it was taking slots back to a simpler time. The lack of visual clutter and the easy online slot bonuses also make it easy for new slot players to pick up and play. 

The betting options were solid – with the minimum bet being $0.30 and the maximum being $180. This should cover the majority of online budgets. 

If you want to play for real money, I would recommend checking out the Mahjong Ways demo version first. This is an excellent way to see if you enjoy the game and allows you to play risk-free. Unfortunately, the lack of a Buy Bonus option means you’ll have to wait to trigger the bonuses if you want to test them out. 

I also tested the Mahjong Ways mobile slot on my iPhone and found that the game’s simple design lent itself really nicely to smaller-screen action. 

The biggest win you can land in the Mahjong Ways slot is a very impressive 25,000x your stake, which is a much bigger amount than I expected from the game. It also boasts an impressive RTP of 96.92% and has been rated as medium on the volatility scale. 

At first glance, the Mahjong Ways slot might appear quite basic, but I found it to be an enjoyable slot game that serves up some potentially decent wins and has a very strong RTP. The game’s design, while simple, makes it a relaxing and easy slot to play, while the bonuses all complement each other nicely and can lead to some nice winning sprees. Of course, a maximum win of 25,000x your stake certainly sweetens the deal. Overall, Mahjong Ways is a slot I am happy to recommend to go for a spin at my recommended slot casinos.
