You have to feel a little sorry for Freya. While her brothers Thor and Loki have become big-name movie stars, she has been left to fill the role of a cult figure, occupying the worlds of online gaming and slot machines. She has a strong legacy on the reels, though, with titles like The Faces of Freya and Tales of Asgard: Freya’s Wedding, both being strong examples of how to use the character. Games Global partner INO Games has now given her life on the reels again with the Freya Valhalla Queen slot game. In this review, I’m going to find out whether this queen manages to slay or whether she should have her crown removed.
Thematically, Freya Valhalla Queen keeps things very simple. The title basically tells us everything we need to know about the story, with the slot not offering any sort of further tale for us to indulge in.
I found the game’s design to be fine, but as far as representations of Valhalla go, this slot doesn’t offer anything particularly new or striking. In fact, the castle in the background of the reels could be anywhere, serving up very little of the drama and excitement that I would typically associate with Valhalla.
However, the game does liven up a little by switching screens when you trigger the bonus rounds. I enjoyed the background for the Battle Free Spins and preferred the slot to use for the base game.
The reel design immediately grabbed my attention, with one big reel displaying three symbols sitting at the end of four other reels, each of which displayed four.
The unique game grid of Freya Valhalla Queen immediately caught my attention, but as it turns out, the slot doesn’t differ too much in terms of game action.
The unique game grid of Freya Valhalla Queen immediately caught my attention, but as it turns out, the slot doesn’t differ too much in terms of game action. There are five reels, with one of them displaying three symbols and the other four displaying four.
This leaves just eight paylines on each spin, with winning combinations paying when players land three or more matching symbols across one of them.
I found that the Freya Valhalla Queen really sprung to life with its bonus features. The first one I should mention is the Freya Symbol. Freya can appear as a big symbol throughout the base game. She can appear 3x3, 3x4, or 4x4 on reels 2-5. If you land her with a single Freya symbol on the first reel, it can lead to a win. Alternatively, landing a full 4x4 Freya will lead to a 125x payout.
Even better than that, though, is the Freya Jackpot. This is worth 20,000x your stake and is paid out if you land a 4x4 Freya on reels 2-5 and have reel one full of Freya symbols.
Landing a Scatter on reel one, along with a minimum of four on the other four reels, will trigger the Free Spins round. The number of spins corresponds with the number of triggering symbols, with 19 being the maximum.
Players get the choice between Magic Free Spins and Battle Free Spins. Regardless of which round you trigger, during the spins, Rune Symbols are collectible and are collected if Freya lands on reel one. A Multiplier can be applied up to 10x depending on Freya’s size on the reel.
In the Magic Free Spins bonus, Rune Symbols are collected on a wheel, with additional spins being played out if you fill the reel.
In Battle Free Spins, a Multiplier is collected every time a Battle symbol lands. This is then paid out at the end of the round.
If you want to skip the queue, you can buy your way into the spins rounds for 26x your stake or with a guaranteed Big Freya Symbol for 33x.
I tested the Freya Valhalla Queen slot on my laptop using Google Chrome and Safari and on an iPhone using Chrome. I had a great experience using all of them, with the game having no problem making the switch. The simple design means that you are not losing much when you switch to a smaller screen size.
The game’s stake is adjusted by clicking on the stack of coins icon on the right-hand side of the grid. The minimum you can wager is $0.10, and the maximum is $10, which does feel a little restrictive.
You can try the Freya Valhalla Queen demo version of the game first before you take it for a spin for real money at our recommended online slot casinos. I would recommend doing this and taking advantage of the Buy Bonus feature. This will give you an idea of the game’s set-up and will also help you decide which of the free spins bonuses you prefer.
The Freya Valhalla Queen’s biggest win is the Freya Jackpot, which is an impressive 20,000x your stake. This is definitely one of the most attractive features of the game. The RTP is 96.07%, and the slot is considered highly volatile. This definitely reflected my experience as I found big wins tough to come by, even during the bonus rounds, with the multipliers not being as big and frequent as I’d expected.
Overall, I found the Freya Valhalla Queen slot to be a mixed bag. The 20,000x maximum win is clearly a huge selling point, and it definitely makes the game worth taking for a spin. However, the design is nothing to shout about, and I found the bonus rounds failed to deliver any notable wins. In fairness, it is rated as highly volatile, so you should go in expecting to wait for big wins if they ever come.
The game grid’s unique design definitely stands out, but outside of being used as a collection feature, it feels a little wasted. Overall, if you like volatile slots with some big potential wins, then Freya Valhalla Queen will likely keep you entertained.
If you enjoy the Freya Valhalla Queen slot, I would recommend taking the Tales of Asgard: Freya’s Wedding slot for a spin, you could also test out the other title in this series, Tales of Asgard: Loki’s Fortune.
You could also try out other INO Games titles like Payout Time!, which is a unique prison-themed slot that packs some big winning potential.
