You won’t find any crystal-clear waters here, with the fishing taking place in chemical-infested waters as boats hunt for mutated fish creatures. As I mentioned in the introduction to this Mutant Trawlers review, the game puts a fresh spin on the fishing genre that has become so popular. Well, I’m not sure fresh is the correct word, with the action taking place beneath the surface of some nuclear-infected waters. 

In place of the bright blue colors you would find in titles like Big Bass Bonanza or Golden Catch, are glowing, dirty greens and browns, with the impact of a local chemical spill clear for all to see. A nuclear factory sits above the surface, with brown clouds bellowing from its chimneys, while several boats hover above the water, looking for whatever twisted creatures and items they can find. 

It’s a fun take on the genre, and Bang Bang Games has done a good job bringing it to life with a suitably hazardous color palette and some nice animation sequences. 

The waters may look hazardous, but I found nothing particularly scary about the Mutant Trawlers gameplay. The slot uses a five-by-three game grid, with 243 ways to win on every spin. Wins are formed by landing three or more matching symbols on consecutive reels, regardless of their position. 

You can find all of the buttons to control the game under the reels, with the stake adjusted by clicking on the stack of coins icon. 

Like other fishing slots, the bulk of the bonus action in Mutant Trawlers is based on catching prizes. 

Mutant Cash Symbols can land on any spin displaying cash prizes. If a Fishing Boat lands on the reel above them, it will collect the prize and pay it out. The Boat then upgrades to a Trawler and a Trawler Respin is triggered. 

The reels respin, with Trawlers able to collect prizes from any reel. Each spin boosts the Trawler Multiplier, which starts at 2x by one. Other boats can also land and get upgraded to Trawlers. The round finishes when no Mutant Cash symbols land. 

The other main bonus is the Meltdown Free Spins round. This is triggered by land three or more Scatters. Three, four, or five Scatters triggers 12, 15, or 20 free spins. During the round, the Multiplier Trawler does not reset. There is also a Gamble feature at the start of the spin. 

If you want to skip the queue, you can buy your way into the Meltdown Free Spins for 65x your bet. 

I took the Mutant Trawlers slot for a spin on my laptop and iPhone. I found the game to be a lot of fun on both, with the quirky design certainly helping it stand out from other titles with a similar theme. 

I found the betting range for the game to be quite limiting, with minimum bets of $0.20 and a maximum of $40, which is surprising for a Yggdrasil partner slot. Bang Bang Games has rated the title as medium/high volatility, which I would say is a fair reflection of my experience, with things tilted towards the higher end.

With so many fishing-themed slots on the market, it is nice to see a developer try something different with the theme. However, Mutant Trawlers does leave a lot to be desired in the winning department. 

The game looks great, and it does an excellent job of standing out thanks to its quirky-spin on the genre. While it may aesthetically different, there are similarities with other fishing-titles in terms of gameplay, and the 3,069x maximum win is not likely to get too many players excited. 

Overall, if you are a fan of fishing-themed slots and want something that looks a little different, Mutant Trawlers will appeal. If you want some fresh gameplay and big wins, however, it is probably not worth casting a line for.
