Ancient civilizations are always a popular source of inspiration for slot developers, and Games Global partner High Limit Studio is taking us on a trip to Mesoamerica for the Tons of Suns online slot. The slot invites us to uncover mysterious ancient treasures through the use of free spins and some jackpot bonuses. Keep reading to find out if I had tons of fun with the game at the best online slot casinos in this Tons of Suns review.
I must admit, I found the design of the Tons of Suns online slot game to be underwhelming, with High Limit Studio making some strange decisions for the slot’s layout. The reel set itself is okay. It is not a particularly inspiring design, with the symbols using a rather basic animation style and the background just being a giant wall.
What struck me, however, was the giant foot pyramid placed next to the reel for no reason whatsoever. Typically, anything placed on the left-hand side of the reel is somehow involved in the action or, at the very least, is animated and adds some character to the game, as we have seen in Hacksaw Gaming titles like Hand of Anubis or Le Bandit. That is not the case here, with the pyramid simply sitting there as nothing more than a distraction.
On the whole, the design of the Tons of Suns game is disappointing, and it does very little to help itself stand out.
In my experience, Tons of Suns is a very simple slot to get to grips with. High Limit Studio has kept things extremely basic, with the slot really not feeling like a game designed in 2023.
The base game of Tons of Suns keeps the action very basic. The slot is set on a standard 5x3 grid, with 243 ways to win on every spin. Wins are formed when three or more matching symbols land on adjacent reels, regardless of their position on those reels.
The main options for the game can be found on the right-hand side of the screen, including autoplay, turbo play, and access to the paytable. You can also adjust your stake using the coins icon.
There is a selection of Tons of Suns bonus features you can trigger on each spin. Firstly, you will notice the Sun Symbols spinning around the reels. Whenever at least one of these lands, a multiplier of up to 25x your bet is paid out, 5,10,15, or 20 free spins, or the Pick Bonus.
The Pick Bonus is the most lucrative of these. In this, picking three matching symbols rewards its respective prize. You can land one of four jackpots, the Mini, Minor, Major, or Mega, which pay 5x, 25x, 50x, or 250x, respectively.
There are also boost symbols that can significantly boost the winning potential of these. The Boost prize adds 250x to the Mega, 50x to the Major, 25x to the Minor, and 5x to the Mini. The Ultra Boost and Epic Boost double and triple those, respectively. You can also select the Win All option, which rewards all of the prizes at once.
The Free Spins bonus is launched through the Sun symbols or by landing three or more Scatters. If you trigger it through Scatters, you will get 10 spins. During the round, a feature trail is active. If you land a Pyramid symbol during the spins, you advance along the Pyramid trail. On the trail, there are multipliers up to 25x, and each time you hit a multiplier, you will be given five additional spins.
In my experience, Tons of Suns is a very simple slot to get to grips with. High Limit Studio has kept things extremely basic, with the slot really not feeling like a game designed in 2023.
I took the slot for a test run on both my desktop and mobile, with the mobile version also being easy to get to grips with. The visual clutter of the screen, with the additional pyramid sitting to the left of the reels, did feel like it was taking up valuable screen real estate for no real reason, though.
The betting range for the slot in the version I tested was $0.20 to $40, which is going to be a bit limiting for higher rollers. I would recommend playing Tons of Suns for free before playing for real money. This will give you a chance to find out if you enjoy the game or not.
If you play Tons of Suns for free, I would also recommend using the Bonus Buy option. This will provide you with instant access to the bonus features, giving you a full taste of what the slot has to offer.
There is nothing about the Tons of Suns math model that immediately grabbed my attention. The returns are fairly average across the board, with the slot serving up a maximum win of 4,556x your stake. The RTP is 96.01%, which is around the average for an online slot. The game is considered highly volatile, which mostly reflects my own experience.
Overall, I found the Tons of Suns online slot game to be very generic, both in terms of its presentation and the gameplay. The Meso-American theme is fairly overdone at this stage, so if you are going to stand out, you need to do something a little different with it. Unfortunately, I thought Tons of Suns fell short in this respect.
The jackpot potential of the slot is good, with the Bonus Pick round serving up some of my better wins, but outside of this, there was nothing I found to be hugely attractive about the slot. If you are a fan of the genre, you may get some enjoyment out of Tons of Suns. Otherwise, you might want to check out some of the other top online slots we have reviewed here.
If you enjoy slots based around ancient or lost cultures, then titles like ELK Studio’s Zulu Gold or Katmandu Gold deliver exciting gameplay with excellent designs. You could also roll back the years and take NetEnt’s classic Gonzo’s Quest for a spin.
