Cumbria is the location of the yet-unnamed winner of a massive £196,646.70 in the June EuroMillions draw, according to the National Lottery.
We know a few things about Cumbria, so we thought we’d share those until we know the exact identity of the lucky winner if they choose to go public.
Cumbria is home to two UNESCO World Heritage Sites: Hadrian's Wall and the English Lake District. It has three national landscapes: Arnside and Silverdale, the Solway Coast, and the North Pennines.
Despite being known as the Lake District, Cumbria has only one official lake, Bassenthwaite Lake.
Cumberland sausage is a protected food with Protected Geographical Indication (PGI) status, meaning it can only be made in Cumbria.
Cumbria is home to only one city, Carlisle. Cumbria has its own distinct dialect, with unique slang words such as "marra," meaning friend and "nowt," meaning nothing.
You can climb England's tallest mountain, Scafell Pike, which stands at 978 m.
The Keswick Pencil Museum in Keswick is home to the world's largest colouring pencil, standing at 7.91 m long and weighing 446.36 kg.
A small patch of The Yorkshire Dales national park spills over into Cumbria from Kirkby Lonsdale to Appleby-in-Westmorland. Cumbria is home to a lost underwater village, Mardale Green, which was flooded in the 1930s to create Haweswater Reservoir.
Did we mention that there are two racecourses where you can place a bet? Racing has been taking place at Cartmel since 1856. Cartmel attracts large crowds and the beautiful setting in the Lake District is worthy of taking a picnic and having a flutter on the horses.
Carlisle Racecourse has undergone extensive redevelopment and has become one of the premier attractions in the region. There is free parking available and 250 acres of parkland surround it.
If a casino or slots is more your style, then there are two venues within Cumbria. Admiral Casino Workington and Admiral Casino Whitehaven.
That’s plenty of information on Cumbria, should you choose to visit.
All we know about the anonymous winner is that they bought the winning ticket on June 4th, and they have since come forward to claim their prize.
The National Lottery is currently validating the win, a process that will ensure the prize is paid out as quickly as possible.
Once the validation process is complete, the winner will have the option to share their good news publicly.
The ticket matched the five main numbers and one Lucky Star number.
Most of my career was spent in teaching including at one of the UK’s top private schools. I left London in 2000 and set up home in Wales raising four beautiful children. I enrolled at University where I studied Photography and film and gained a Degree and subsequently a Masters Degree. In 2014 I helped launch a new local newspaper and managed to get front and back page as well as 6 filler pages on a weekly basis. I saw that journalism was changing and was a pioneer of hyperlocal news in Wales. In 2017 I started one of the first 24/7 free independent news sites for Wales. Having taken that to a successful business model I was keen for a new challenge. Joining the company is exciting for me especially as it is a new role in Europe. I am keen to establish myself and help others to do the same.
