The last few months of the year, as the weather gets colder and the days get shorter, can lead us down a slippery road of picking up bad habits. The festive period is a breathing ground for junk food and excessive calorie consumption, and it's very easy to ditch the gym and cozy up on the couch and indulge in Netflix.
As 2023 comes to an end, many people are aspiring to be a better version of themselves in 2024, or simply broaden their horizons and step out of their comfort zone. The average New Year's resolution lasts just 3.74 months, according to a recent study from Forbes, while January 17 has been dubbed as "Ditch New Year's Resolutions Day" or "Quitter's Day".
Regardless, the new year is the perfect clean slate to set new goals, however big or small. This leads us to the question of what resolutions Canadians are making this year. Well, we analysed the data from Google to find each province or territory's most popular New Year's resolution.
There might be some people whose resolution it is to win more money from the best online casino sites, but unsurprisingly, fitness, smoking, drinking, and losing weight categories led the way - but let's dig more into the results.
Getting on to the dating scene was a popular resolution, with Quebec, Ontario, and British Columbia all looking for love if the search results are anything to go by.
People in New Brunswick are looking for a new job, while Saskatchewans want to ditch smoking in 2024.
Alberta, Newfoundland and Labrador, and Nunavut all care more about the outside than the inside, with their New Year's Resolutions relating to fitness and weight loss.
Manitobans want to win more money (psst - check out our guides; we can help you there).
Meanwhile, Nova Scotia was the only area looking on the inside with their top resolution, with more meditation on the cards for Bluenosers.
While the above represents the top results for provinces or territories, health and fitness are featured prominently in each area's top three resolutions.
British Columbians want to get stronger and read more, while Ontario natives are looking to couple getting on the dating scene with losing weight and getting stronger. They may want to check out the best Ontario casinos while they are at it!
Quebec residents also want to ditch smoking in 2024, and while they're at it, increase their productivity.
People in Saskatchewan want a better night's sleep to go alongside their non-smoking, whilst Nova Scotians are happy with their fitness levels and instead want to get a raise!
Methodology:
We used Google Trends to measure the level of interest in the most popular New Year's resolutions. We examined a number of queries and then determined each province or territory's most searched resolution.
In the case where an area had equal levels of interest for multiple resolutions, search volumes for each item using semrush were measured in that area to determine a favorite.
Disclaimer - we can't say for sure whether specific search queries related to people taking up that as a New Year's resolution. We've made that assumption, given the time of year.
