Casinos can provide a huge amount of fun and entertainment, and in some cases they can also offer a luxurious stay. But, as you might imagine, some casinos can be a bit on the seedy side, and maybe not the cleanest places you’ve ever been. And when we talk about the word “dirty” here, we’re not referring to money laundering, which is a totally different problem.
No, we’re talking about the general state of cleanliness both in the casino and the hotel rooms, as well as what level of hygiene you can expect from the restaurants.
We’ve all seen the horror stories about bedbugs and suspicious marks in the toilet, so we went on a mission to find out which Canadian casinos are the downright dirtiest. And if we had one word of advice on these, it would simply be "avoid.”
When we went in search of the dirtiest casinos, we had to choose a selection of casinos to look at. We decided that the best way to come to a conclusion was to trust the people out there, so we headed to Tripadvisor and looked for keywords like "unhygienic," "filthy," and "messy." And some of the reviews actually physically pained us to read.
These are the casinos we assessed:
If you want to enjoy any semblance of a clean casino experience, the main place to avoid is Great Canadian Casino Resort Toronto. It received 19.02% on our Dirty Scale, with 17 reviews mentioning the word “dirty” and another six calling it "filthy." “I actually had to leave this congested filth, go outside, and watch the planes fly overhead. I enjoyed that more than being inside!” said one review. The vast majority of negative reviews were about the absolute state of the toilets. Gross.
The second dirtiest casino in Canada is officially Grey Eagle Resort and Casino. With 14.14% on the Dirty Scale, it had 28 keyword mentions out of a total 198 reviews. A whopping 16 of those reviews referred to something as "smelly."
“The casino also permits smoking inside in designated areas, which makes it smelly and itchy for the eyes." says one unflattering review.
Pretty much all the “smelly” reviews were about cigarette smoke, which might be acceptable for smokers but for absolutely no one else.
Starlight Casino Point Edward came in at third dirtiest, but there was actually a drastic improvement between second and third place, as this one got a Dirty Rating of 8.03%, with just 13 mentions of one of our keywords.
Four people did call it filthy though, and six said it was smelly, so it’s still not great. “The floor was dirty, and on the bed had a huge spider web. It looked like the place was not cleaned for days.” Spiderwebs? In the bed? It’s a hard pass from me.
On the good side of the scale, we found that the cleanest casino in Canada was Casino of the Rockies. The great news is that this one got 0% on our Dirty Scale! Not one person mentioned any of our keywords, so we are pretty confident that this one is actually not dirty, messy, or filthy. Phew, at least you have one option that promises some level of cleanliness!
Coming in at second to last on the Dirty Scale (it’s actually good to be a loser this time), we have Casino de Charlevoix. This one received 0.39% on the scale, with just two reviews mentioning either of our keywords—one called out “greasy” and one "smelly," so we had to investigate.
“On the way out, I saw the half-hearted attempt at a restaurant. It sells rotisserie chicken, looks like a fast food place, and smelled greasy and acrid," which should put you off the food, but at least it’s not the rooms that are greasy, right?
Third from the bottom of the scale (again, this is a good thing), was Gateway Casinos Sault Ste. Marie, with a rating of 0.43%. Only one person used one of our keywords, and it was "smelly."
On closer inspection, the review actually said, “We are a group of cyclists, cycling-camping Canada, over 7,500 km. Coming across the casino is heaven-sent. We were welcomed in the most friendly manner in spite of being in our sweaty, smelly cycling tights and jerseys.”
That’s the nicest use of the word “smelly” we think we’ve ever seen.
