Malta Gaming Authority Charts Path for Sustainable Growth in the Gaming Industry

Charles Mizzi, CEO of the Malta Gaming Authority, spoke on the future of the gaming industry at Sigma Europe 2025.

In a recent address at Sigma Europe, Charles Mizzi, CEO of the Malta Gaming Authority (MGA), unveiled strategic plans aimed at fostering sustainability and operational efficiency within the gaming sector as part of their agenda for 2025.

This year marks Mizzi’s first at the helm, and his insights reflect a commitment to building upon the strong foundation laid by his predecessors while ensuring the industry's continued relevance and innovation.

“Our priority for the upcoming year is to uphold the sustainability of the gaming industry while enhancing our operational efficiency,” Mizzi explained.

He emphasised the importance of the MGA maintaining a proactive role as a regulator, balancing the need for a secure gaming environment with the growing demand for innovation and growth opportunities among licensed operators.

Ongoing Commitment to Regulatory Framework

With the increasing global competition among jurisdictions, Mizzi highlighted the MGA's mission to position Malta as the preferred hub for gaming companies. This involves an ongoing commitment to creating a regulatory framework that not only protects players but also nurtures industry growth.

“Remaining close to operators, understanding their needs, and staying ahead of competition is integral to maintaining our status,” he noted.

One of the focal points of the MGA’s strategy includes embracing emerging technologies, such as blockchain. Malta has been a pioneer in this domain, having regulated blockchain technologies for nearly a decade. With numerous online casinos already adopting cryptocurrencies, Malta is well-prepared to navigate both the challenges and opportunities presented by blockchain in the gaming sector.

MGA Aiming to Create Awareness of Potential Risks with Gaming

The MGA’s initiatives to promote responsible gambling practices also stand out as a cornerstone of their regulatory approach. By educating both players and operators through partnerships with organisations like the Responsible Gaming Foundation, the MGA aims to create awareness around potential risks associated with gaming.

Additionally, to maintain competitive licensing standards, the MGA adopts a collaborative, supportive approach towards operators. This includes offering guidance on compliance measures and conducting regular operational reviews.

“We believe in a partnership model where we assist operators in meeting compliance standards before taking corrective actions,” Mizzi pointed out, stressing the importance of flexibility, especially for new or emerging operators.

CEO Highlights Transparency and Optimism for Sustainable Gaming Ecosystem

Transparency and integrity remain at the core of the MGA's operations, with Mizzi asserting the organisation’s commitment to accountability through annual operational reports and regular stakeholder engagements.

Looking ahead five years, Mizzi acknowledged that Malta's gaming industry has reached a maturity phase, with a shift from rapid expansion to organic growth.

Yet, he expressed optimism about continued investment and job creation within the sector. Mizzi extended his gratitude and reaffirmed the MGA’s dedication to fostering a sustainable gaming ecosystem. "We look forward to welcoming new operators and continuing to position Malta as a beacon of innovation and responsibility in the gaming world," he concluded.

With these initiatives, the Malta Gaming Authority is undoubtedly shaping the future of sustainability in the gaming industry, ensuring that Malta remains a frontrunner in the global gaming landscape.

Most of my career was spent in teaching including at one of the UK’s top private schools. I left London in 2000 and set up home in Wales raising four beautiful children. I enrolled at University where I studied Photography and film and gained a Degree and subsequently a Masters Degree. In 2014 I helped launch a new local newspaper and managed to get front and back page as well as 6 filler pages on a weekly basis. I saw that journalism was changing and was a pioneer of hyperlocal news in Wales. In 2017 I started one of the first 24/7 free independent news sites for Wales. Having taken that to a successful business model I was keen for a new challenge. Joining the company is exciting for me especially as it is a new role in Europe. I am keen to establish myself and help others to do the same.
