Once a symbol of sophistication and glamour, smoking has seen a significant shift in public perception and regulation, especially in venues like casinos.

While smoking was once a common sight on the Las Vegas Strip and in gambling establishments around the world, growing awareness of its health risks has led to widespread smoking bans indoors.

However, outdoor smoking areas remain available, and the ongoing debate about smoke-free casinos continues to evolve.

The UK government recently announced legislation to ban the sale of single-use vapes, with the new rule set to take effect on June 1, 2025.

This development, confirmed by Circular Economy Minister Mary Creagh, highlights the growing focus on public health and reducing smoking-related harms, not just from traditional tobacco products but also from vaping.

Casinos Making Adjustments for Smokers and Non-Smokers

As smoking remains legal in most Las Vegas casinos, many establishments have responded to health-conscious customers by creating non-smoking areas or becoming entirely smoke-free.

Notable casinos have embraced this trend, paving the way for a more positive atmosphere for patrons concerned about second-hand smoke. However, the presence of high-profile celebrities who smoke or have publicly struggled with the habit often complicates this narrative.

Pop icon Barry Manilow, for example, was recently spotted vaping before launching his residency at the Westgate Resort & Casino in Las Vegas, raising eyebrows among fans familiar with his past health struggles, including throat cancer attributed to years of smoking.

As studies consistently show that smoking can have devastating effects on vocal health, the prevalence of the habit among singers in the entertainment industry is noteworthy.

Many renowned artists have been open about their smoking habits, despite the associated risks. Bruno Mars, Zayn Malik, Chris Brown, and Selena Gomez have all been spotted smoking, often citing stress and the pressures of fame as contributing factors.

Music Legends Associated with Smoking

Historically, the association between smoking and musical talent has been complicated; many legendary artists, such as Etta James and Aretha Franklin, also battled with smoking habits.

A new generation of talent has some high-profile smokers, including Dua Lipa, Ed Sheeran, and Lana Del Rey.

This prompted folks in the industry to question the long-held belief that talent and smoking can coexist without consequences.

While some stars have managed to kick the habit, evidence shows that smoking is often viewed as a coping mechanism amidst the pressures of fame. The entertainment industry is rife with examples of singers who have succumbed to the temptations of smoking and drugs.

From substance abuse battles to significant health scares, the impact is clear: smoking can wreak havoc on a singer's vocal cords and overall health.

The Undeniable Impact on Health

The reality is that the harmful effects of smoking are undeniable, making the choice to light up a troubling trend for those aiming for a successful music career.

The message to aspiring artists is clear-prioritizing vocal health and overall well-being should take precedence over any portrayal of smoking as glamorous or necessary for creative expression.

The ongoing discussion surrounding smoking in casinos reflects broader societal changes and underscores the need for continued public health advocacy against tobacco use.

Moving Towards Smoke-Free Casinos

With the trend shifting towards healthier environments and away from smoking, the future of the casino industry could very well be smoke-free—an important development for both patrons and the stars who perform for them.

As we move forward, the hope is that more artists will choose to break free from the grips of smoking, leading to longer, healthier careers and a lasting legacy of vocal excellence.

Most of my career was spent in teaching including at one of the UK’s top private schools. I left London in 2000 and set up home in Wales raising four beautiful children. I enrolled at University where I studied Photography and film and gained a Degree and subsequently a Masters Degree. In 2014 I helped launch a new local newspaper and managed to get front and back page as well as 6 filler pages on a weekly basis. I saw that journalism was changing and was a pioneer of hyperlocal news in Wales. In 2017 I started one of the first 24/7 free independent news sites for Wales. Having taken that to a successful business model I was keen for a new challenge. Joining the company is exciting for me especially as it is a new role in Europe. I am keen to establish myself and help others to do the same.
