More Unusual Suspects Slot

In 2023, Northern Lights Gaming dropped the first Unusual Suspects slot game, and it has only taken them six months to release the follow-up, More Unusual Suspects. Firstly, I’m looking forward to this as I have never played the first game, and this will be my first experience with any Northern Lights video slot. 

I have no clue what to expect with this game, so I cannot approach the opening of this review with my usual dread and eye-rolling. For once, like you, this is all new to me. This review will capture my first-hand experience, as I highlight all the gaming features, from bonuses to payouts. I will also learn a bit about the software behind this game, which will help me going forward if I get to review their work again. 

So, without further ado, More Unusual Suspects by Northern Lights. 

So, to understand More Unusual Suspects, I had to go back to the original game, which was a crime genre slot that hosted more features than crooks. It looked like a banger of a game, and when compared to the new slot release, many of the outstanding features transitioned into this sequel. 

More Unusual Suspects retains the same slot layout—a 4x5 gaming grid with a powerbar (Bonus Perk Pick) above the reels. You have a Buy and Gamble feature, which was also in the original game. But with the new edition, there are four jackpot prizes you can win: Grand, Major, Minor, and Mini.

The new game is louder and comes with a different backdrop, in which a helicopter flies by every 10 seconds. It’s a sleeker game, but the core features remain, including the 20 paylines. Even the symbols featured on the reels are the same. 

What you get with More Unusual Suspects is the original game but with upgrades in what can be won, i.e., the four potential jackpot values. Having compared all aspects of the two slots, you really do not need to play the first Unusual Suspects slot by Northern Lights to get this game. 

Like me, you can dive into this game by first setting the price you want to pay per spin. Select the coin stack icon, and you’ll see the price per spin range from $0.10 to $15. Now, immediately, I have to point out that $15 as a maximum bet is one of the lowest maximum bet prices I have seen in my seven years of doing casino slot reviews. Having seen what the max payout is, it makes $15, which is a good value for money, but there will be more on this later.

When you have chosen the cash setting of your bet per spin, you can begin playing by pressing the large spin button to the right of the reels. Remember, when playing slots, it’s all left to chance; playing is very easy, and you just let the game do its thing. 

Wins are formed by matching three or more of the same symbols upon any of the 20 paylines. The symbols must run from left to right on the pattern to constitute a win. And this is how to play the game. It is very simple, but note that there are many special features within this slot that assist your pursuit of trying to win money and lots of it. 

Like the first game, More Unusual Suspects comes with the same cache of special features: 

• Golden Wilds: These feature in both the base game and the free spins bonus round. When they land, they explode to create duplicate Wilds over the reels. 
• Wild Sticky: For every Wild that lands, it will leave behind a x1 multiplier sticky frame. This multiplier can increase wins up to x5 their value.
• Detective Wild Bonus: This is triggered by the Detective symbol, which puts Wilds into sticky frames, and any multipliers on any win line are also applied. This feature plays in both free spins and base games. However, during the free spins, the sticky frames remain till the round is over.
• Scatter Symbol: When scatter symbols land during play, they will help to power the Bonus Perk Pick. Land two scatters, and you add one token to this powerbar. You need 50 to fill it. When the bar is filled, you unlock a bonus perk when you start the bonus free spins round.
• Scatter Nudging Respin: Land two scatter symbols along the top rows, and you trigger the Nudge Respin. Any reel with a scatter will move down by one row while the other reels respin. This motion continues until the scatter symbols reach the bottom rows or until five land.
• Bonus Perk Pick: This is the bonus free spins game, but first, pick a suspect from the lineup to reveal which perk or perks will feature in the bonus round. They include: Boost Perk, +2 Spin Perk, +Frames Perk + Wild Perk, and +Detective Perk.
• Big Boss Free Spins: Three, four, or five scatter symbols activate the free spins bonus. Three = 10 free spins, Four = 15 free spins, and five scatters = 20 free spins. During play, you will trigger the big boss feature for every two detective symbols that land. The first = five spins and x2 multiplier. The second = five spins and an x3 multiplier. The third = five spins and x5 multiplier, and the fourth boss = five spins and x10 multiplier. The trail resets if you complete it.
• Getaway Bonus Spin: You might be awarded one last getaway spin at the end of the last free spin.
• Vault Jackpot Bonus: The Gold Bar symbols can be collected in the vault and can randomly trigger the jackpot bonus. In this Jackpot game, you play a pick-me feature. Reveal three matching jackpots, and you win that prize. Grand = 5,000x your wager, Major = 1,000x, Minor = 75x, and Mini = 20x your bet.
• Bonus Buy: Buy your way into the free spins round through the buy bonus slots element. However, there aren’t any guarantees you can surpass the cost of this feature.
• Gamble: Play a gamble feature that may or may not reward you with free spins. There is a price to pay, and it’s a 50/50 gamble.

I came into the More Unusual Suspects game with a real buzz of excitement, having not played the first game nor any game by Northern Lights. As it was a first, I played More Unusual Suspects in its free demo mode, which you can do via this review. I set my bet to $2.50 per spin, and I played 50 spins. The music in this game is similar to other crime-themed slots. I landed a few Sticky Frames during play, collected several Gold Bars, and boosted the Bonus Perk bar.

On my 48 spins, I triggered the Scatter Nudge Respins feature, but at the end of all my 50 spins, I was down $40 on my original balance. But boy-oh-boy, do I like this game, and I’m definitely looking for this in my favorite online casino. 

While the maximum wins from the jackpot are a mere 5,000x your wager, it is possible to win 8,000x your bet during the actual gameplay. This makes the max payout $120,000. Now, there aren’t many slots that can pay this huge sum for spins at a max cost of $15. This is what makes More Unusual Suspects good value for money. The RTP is 96.06%, and the volatility is a cool medium setting, which is my favorite. 

Let’s keep this short and sweet. I’m very impressed by Northern Lights Gaming. This game is packed with features, as slots should be. It’s a well-designed game and, so far, one of the best new slots of the year.
