Looking to put a bit of spark back into the slot casinos and power up the recent lack of performances in some Play’n GO slots, Spark of Genius certainly comes with the right programming. Now, at first glance, and with its very fancy intro video, moody orchestral music, and subject matter, Spark of Genius looks like the kind of slot game that esteemed Hollywood director Christopher Nolan would make. This game looks and sounds incredible. It looks innovative, and it also looks like Play’n GO has, so far, dropped one of its best slot games ever.
Is my assessment thus far right or wrong? Well, the only way to find out is to play the game. For this review, I take on Spark of Genius as a real money slot game. I will share that experience with you and discuss the qualities of the software and its gaming features.
The Spark of Genius slot is a concept slot which is designed around the era of the late 1800s and focuses on the development of electrical engineering. Now, it’s not a groundbreaking idea, but it is certainly rare. There are perhaps a handful of games that delve into the ideas of this, most notably the Nolimit City slot Tesla Jolt.
Spark of Genius opens with an old-time new story about the development of power by two engineers. Both are seeking to win a new contract to redevelop the power grid. You have the concept of Manifest Energy by Maynard Woodrow and Resonant Energy by Tess Jacova.
The game is set in a grand hall where the two engineers showcase their work in front of a press audience and peers. The slot has a layout of 6 rows and 6 reels, with symbols that are made of circuit parts or paths and nothing more. To the left of the slot, stands Maynard, with Tess standing on the right.
Above the reels and rows is an energy charger that will fluctuate between the powers of the Manifest and Resonant energies. During play, you not only have the sweeping violin music play but also audio drops from the characters.
Spark of Genius is a very niche game. The subject is not one that produces action or excitement. This is a more reserved game with ideas and like I say, it’s a world within itself. I like the design and I like the ideas. However, it’s not a game for everyone.
The Spark of Genius slot by Play’n GO is going to be held by many of the top casinos online. Finding it will not be an issue. Locate it, make your deposit to the casino, load the game, and set your betting. The cost of playing this game starts at $0.10 and rises to a max bet value of $100 per spin.
When you have set your bet, press the green button to spin the reels, or you can opt to play with auto spins using the yellow button. Spark of Genius doesn’t actually spin reels because it is a Tumbling Reels slot game. With Tumbler slots, the symbols drop in and out of the rows and reels. Wins are made by connecting pathways to complete a closed circuit within the reels. There are 3 circuit parts: 2 paths, 3 paths, and 4 paths. These can make circles, squares, and an interconnection between the two. The larger the circuit that is formed, the greater the payout. The smallest circuit will consist of 4 symbols, while the largest can be 25 or more.
When a win is produced, the circuit symbols will explode and be removed from the reels. New symbols drop into the game from above, to perform a motion of consecutive play. These new symbols can produce new circuits with the pre-existing symbols, so one ‘spin’ can produce more than a single win. This leads to more action for your money.
Each win that is made, relative to the type of energy that produces the win, will load into the energy charger feature. This charger has three features for the Manifest Energy and three for the Resonant Energy.
The features of the energy charger are as follows.
Manifest Energy:
Relay: Triggered by 15 path connections, this feature will remove 7 to 11 paths and replace them with new ones to potentially produce a full circuit.
Overload: 25 connecting paths will trigger this feature to produce 2 to 6 new paths while randomly destroying and removing the same number.
Empire Energy Spin: land a 35-path circuit, and you will trigger the big Energy Spin. This is a free spin with a multiplier feature that increases to a power of 20x.
Resonant Energy:
Gyrota: Triggered by making a 15-path circuit win, this feature will rotate between 3 and 7 symbols to, hopefully, produce new full circuits.
Dynamo: This feature triggers with a 25-path circuit win and places 2 to 6 new special circuit symbols into the game.
Free Energy Spin: Get a 35-path circuit win and launch the Free Energy Spins. This single free spin feature has a multiplier power that can produce up to an x20 value.
The concept of this game is very good at bringing players into the world in which it is set. Not many real money slots can claim to have this kind of power. It’s an epic slot, but having looked into the special features, I’m worried that the base game will lack spark.
I loaded Spark of Genius from my online casinos. I played my usual $2 per spin and set the game to play 50 auto spins. For the first 6 spins played, wins were made, and the game was looking promising. The wins, however, were returning less than the $2 paid to play. Eventually, I triggered a charger feature, the Gyrota, but there was little in return. This is very much a slot that players have to commit to. It’s a slow-burner kind of game. There is entertainment, but ultimately, there will be players who will be put off by the lack of return. I ended the 50 spins without being able to cash anything out.
The maximum payout in this game is 10,000 times what you wager per spin. If you play to the max bet of $100, the jackpot will be capped at $1,000,000! The RTP is set at 96.30% and comes with an unsurprisingly high volatility setting.
Spark of Genius is a very niche game. The subject is not one that produces action or excitement. This is a more reserved game with ideas and like I say, it’s a world within itself. I like the design and I like the ideas. However, it’s not a game for everyone.
There are slots similar to this that produce that thrill factor, and these are more of your steam-punk style of games. I recommend the following slots as alternative sources of gaming to boost your online experience.

The game does host a free spins round, but not in the conventional sense whereby you need to land 3 bonus symbols to activate it. You need to land 15 consecutive wins or make a 35-path circuit connection to win your single free spin.
The game’s RTP calculation comes in at an average score of 96.30%. This Return to Player rating is a calculated theory of how much of your own money you can win back. However, players should remember that all wins are based on luck.
The Spark of Genius slot was released by Play’n GO on May 16 2024. Loads more games came out around this time that I have reviewed. Check out Wild Survivor, Piranha Pays, and Mystery Genie: Fortunes of the Lamp to see how they fare and to play the free demos.
