Dubai Deports Suspected Gambling Network Leader to India

The alleged kingpin of a criminal gambling network dubbed Mr. Big has been deported from Dubai to India following an investigation by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) using a Red-corner notice (RCN).

An RCN warrants the detention or arrest of any listed subject across its 195 member countries for subsequent deportation or extradition.

Wanted in Connection with Dispersal of Proceeds of Crime 

Deepakkumar Dhirajlal Thakkar, from Dubai, United Arab Emirates (UAE), was wanted in connection with alleged criminal activity where he has been accused of using hawala channels for the dispersal of proceeds of crime worth ₹2,273 crore generated in his illegal activities. 

On Sunday (Sep 1), Thakkar was located, detained, and deported to India by Interpol on a request from the CBI.  

In a statement, a CBI official said: “CBI’s Global Operations Centre coordinated with the Gujarat police, the International Criminal Police Organization (Interpol) and the authorities of Abu Dhabi’s National Central Bureau for the return of a Red-Notice subject, Dipakkumar Dhirajlal Thakkar, from the UAE to India on September 1.”  

Partner Organisations Unite to Extradite Thakkar for Alleged Crimes 

Among the alleged criminal activities Thakkar is accused of is cheating, forgery, criminal conspiracy, causing disappearance of evidence and offences related to the Information Technology Act and Prevention of Gambling Act.   

A CBI spokesperson said that Thakkar was geolocated in Dubai through Interpol, after which a security mission from the Gujarat Police travelled to the UAE and returned with him.  

An official at the CBI said: “As the National Central Bureau for Interpol in India, CBI coordinates with all law enforcement agencies in India for assistance via Interpol channels.”
