A lucky couple visiting southwest France recently revealed how they cleverly concealed their €26 million EuroMillions lottery ticket among a stack of dishes, fearing it might get lost before they could claim their bonus at the end of their holiday.
The pair purchased the winning ticket in Bagnères-de-Bigorre, Hautes-Pyrénées, during a pit stop on their way to a rented gite. Little did they know, their ticket would turn out to be a record-breaking winner for the region.
According to the manager of the tobacco shop where they bought the ticket, news of the win spread quickly. “A lot of people started coming to see me,” he shared with FranceBleu.
The anonymous couple described their excitement and anxiety: “It was unreal. We couldn't sleep at night. We kept the ticket in bed with us, took it to the beach, and even took turns watching it while swimming. In our rental, we hid it under a pile of plates and in the furniture.”
Following EuroMillions organizer FDJ’s guidelines, they held on to the ticket until they could officially validate their win. On August 7, they swapped it for a giant cheque.
“We’re thrilled to have the means to do good for our families and loved ones, and of course, to travel with them,” they expressed.
Meanwhile, the tobacco shop manager is revelling in the excitement as well. He plans to put up a large banner celebrating the win, aiming to boost his business for the month.
If you were in their shoes, where would you hide your winning lottery ticket?
Most of my career was spent in teaching including at one of the UK’s top private schools. I left London in 2000 and set up home in Wales raising four beautiful children. I enrolled at University where I studied Photography and film and gained a Degree and subsequently a Masters Degree. In 2014 I helped launch a new local newspaper and managed to get front and back page as well as 6 filler pages on a weekly basis. I saw that journalism was changing and was a pioneer of hyperlocal news in Wales. In 2017 I started one of the first 24/7 free independent news sites for Wales. Having taken that to a successful business model I was keen for a new challenge. Joining the company is exciting for me especially as it is a new role in Europe. I am keen to establish myself and help others to do the same.
