The newest casino in Las Vegas opened on Tuesday. Throngs of customers began filing into Durango Casino and Resort at 10 a.m., wide-eyed and smiling.
Located about 12 miles southwest of the Strip, Durango adds 200 hotel rooms, 2,300 slot machines and 60 table games (but no spa or movie theater) to a surprisingly casino-less quadrant of Las Vegas that has grown rapidly over the past decade.
Consider it proof of concept. With Durango, Red Rock Resorts and Station Casinos are showing that for $780 million they can quickly throw up a locals destination that is plenty luxe without being pretentious … all while becoming a focal point that changes an entire section of the city.
The opening kicks off a growth plan for Red Rock that will see similar casino-resorts pop up around town, with their next planned construction tagged as Inspirada in Henderson.
