As the old saying goes, Maryland is for lovers. No, wait, that’s Virginia. But they’re geographically close enough, right? Either way, we’re sure there are some lovely, romantic places for you and your partner to visit in Maryland. How about the epitome of romance—a casino?
There’s only one foolproof way to find out which Maryland casino is the most romantic of them all: check the reviews. We headed to Tripadvisor to look for mentions of keywords like “romantic,” “married,” and “proposed,” and based on how often they came up, we ranked each land-based casino on our very special scale.
There are only six casinos in Maryland, so we managed to look at all of them for our guide:
As there were only six of them, we’ll go through the casinos in order for you.
Topping the list with a rating of 3.47% was Rocky Gap Casino, Resort & Golf, located in Flintstone. There were 56 keyword mentions here, with “romantic” coming up 19 times and “wedding” 31 times. Set on a lake, the outdoor areas seem to be the standout feature of this casino and hotel.
According to one review, “We have been here a couple of times for winter getaways. It is always a lovely romantic getaway. The hotel and grounds are beautiful, the spa services are wonderful and relaxing, and the indoor pool was very nice. Dinner and breakfast were delicious.”
In second place, MGM National Harbor was rated dramatically lower than Rocky Gap, receiving a rating of 0.74%. The casino features a theatre with regular live entertainment, a luxurious hotel, and in their very own words, “a gaming floor bigger than the White House,” which doesn’t mean anything to us because we’ve never actually been in the White House. Anyway.
One review was particularly complimentary, saying, “The outdoor terrace area offers some great views of both National Harbor and Old Town Alexandria along with some iconic elements of the Washington, DC skyline. It's an especially romantic place to experience at sunset.”
Still in the top three but not performing particularly well was Live! Casino & Hotel Maryland, with a rating of 0.58% based on eight keyword mentions. With hotel rooms including suites, a spa, and more than 4,000 slot machines, Live! Casino sounds like a pretty good place for a date. According to one review entitled “Romantic Getaway,” “It was a good experience. Wanted to feel the excitement at night as though it were in the day. It was a great location from the hotel.” Perhaps not a shining recommendation, but it sounds okay-ish.
Despite the glitzy name, Hollywood Casino only had a grand total of one keyword mention, so it got a rating of 0.41% on the 🩷 Casinos.com Romance Scale 🩷. And that one review wasn’t even about a wonderful date or a fancy proposal. In fact, it said, “We were in the area for a wedding so we decided to go there. It's a very small casino. Not many table games, mostly slots.”
Horseshoe Casino in Baltimore had over 24,000 reviews, so surely quite a few of them must have mentioned our keywords, right? Right?! Unfortunately, there were only 24 mentions in total, leading to a rating of 0.10%. And most of the people who used the word “engaged” were talking about how the staff were too busy being engaged in their own conversations to pay any attention to customers.
“I expected much more. The place seems run down. The second floor feels like a wedding venue”, said one review. We don’t really understand why that’s a negative thing.
There was bad news for Ocean Downs Casino—it scored a zero on our scale. Yes, that means absolutely no reviews mentioned any of our romantic keywords. So if we can offer one piece of advice, it would be to stay away from Ocean Downs if you’re planning a romantic date.
Casinos.com utilized Tripadvisor reviews to do an in-depth analysis of phrases associated with being romantic to determine the Maryland casino that is the most romantic. We calculated the percentage of memorable-related mentions in the total Tripadvisor reviews.
Keywords tracked: Romantic, Proposal, Proposed, Wedding, Engaged, Married, Marriage, Honeymoon
