The latest financial report from the Missouri Gaming Commission has revealed that the state’s thirteen riverboat casinos brought in $163.4 million in Adjusted Gross Revenue (AGR) during August 2024, the second month of FY2025. This figure represents a 4.5% increase compared to the $156.4 million AGR reported in August 2023.

The ranking of the top-performing casinos remained largely the same as last August, except Hollywood Casino moved up to the second spot, overtaking River City Casino. Ameristar Casino continued to lead the way, generating $25.5 million in revenue. Hollywood Casino St. Louis followed with $22.9 million, while River City Casino Hotel took the third place spot, contributing $21.6 million in AGR.

Eight of the thirteen riverboats saw year-on-year revenue increases, with Hollywood Casino St. Louis reporting the largest growth of 14.9%. The other five casinos reported revenue declines. Horseshoe St. Louis saw the steepest drop of 11.1%.

August Bounce-Back Puts Missouri AGR on Track for Recording Breaking Year

Two months of Missouri casino AGR are on the books for fiscal year 2025, and thanks to the increase in revenues in August 2024, casinos are back on track to bring in more revenue than ever. Casinos have collected $318,551,149 over two months, and if this rate extends across the whole fiscal year, AGR will hit over $1.92 billion. Missouri’s record-holding year for AGR is 2023, which also saw $1.92 billion in revenues.

First Two Months of Fiscal year 2024 AGR First Two Months of Fiscal Year 2025 AGRChange
$324,821,557$318,551,149-1.9%

Notably, fiscal year 2024 started stronger than 2025, bringing in $324,821,577 over the first two months. Fiscal year 2024 ended with a total of $1.89 billion in AGR. Traditionally, AGR falls in January and February at MO casinos, which may end the hopes that fiscal year 2025 can break the state’s AGR record.

Missouri Sports Betting in the Spotlight in Comparison with Kansas Casinos

While August’s bounceback is good news for Missouri casinos, it doesn’t diminish the message sent out by July’s fall in AGR that casinos need to find new ways to attract players. This is an issue for Missouri casinos as visitor numbers have declined consistently since the fiscal year 2015, when casinos hosted 29.1 million patrons. In fiscal year 2024, that number slumped to 14.5 million.

One likely way is through the legalization of retail sports betting. Sports betting is expected to make it to the November ballot in Missouri, with any legislation likely to introduce retail sportsbooks to casinos. In addition to making casinos more appealing to gamblers, having these facilities in MO will stop gamblers from crossing the border to Kansas to bet on sports. There is clearly demand for sports betting in Missouri, with 16,000 Missourians trying to place bets on the first weekend of betting in Kansas in September 2022.
