Most Romantic Michigan Casinos, Perfect for Couples

There are lots of reasons people visit casinos. To try for a big jackpot, to enjoy a few casual table games, or to check out the nightlife. But casino destinations can be a great choice for a romantic date night, or even a proposal or wedding ceremony. And keen casino fans in Michigan can choose from lots of options. 

Ever since the 1980s, casinos have been springing up all over Michigan. Nowadays, there are 26 casinos in the state, ranging from large casinos in the heart of Detroit to smaller casinos on Native American land. But which one is the most romantic? We decided to find out.

Rather than visiting each casino in the state, we headed to Tripadvisor to see what real people had been saying. We looked for mentions of certain keywords, including “married,” “honeymoon,” and “proposal,” to see which casinos in the state are the most romantic. 

We looked at these casinos in MI:

• Four Winds Casino Dowagiac
• Lac Vieux Desert Resort and Casino

Four Winds Casino New Buffalo came out on top, with 2.05% on our scale. The word “proposed” came up most frequently, with nine mentions. With more than 400 luxurious rooms, a fitness center, and valet parking, Four Winds sure does sound like a great location for a romantic date. 

One review said, “My husband & I loved it there so much that we decided to get married in Michigan City, IN, & spend our honeymoon at Four Winds on Halloween 2012. It was a blast!!”

Despite coming second with 1.12% on the scale, Bay Mills Resort & Casinos only had two keyword mentions. That’s just because the casino had a relatively low number of reviews, at 178. Overall, the reviews were very positive, especially from couples. One review said, “What can I say.....I love this place! Clean rooms, great food and staff are over the top! The property is so clean and the bay view is spectacular! I feel welcomed the moment I arrive.”

Coming in at third place, Soaring Eagle Casino got 1.07% on our scale. There were 11 keyword mentions here, with “marriage” and “proposal” each coming up three times. 

One person said, “The outside concerts are fun, a great atmosphere. The hotel is fancy, and the indoor pool is nice and warm. There is an outdoor spa under a gazebo that adds a romantic feel”. We had a quick look for some pics, and we have to say it looks dreamy! We’ll start dropping hints now, and hopefully we get taken there for a romantic trip soon. 

So far, it sounds like Michigan’s casinos are pretty romantic, right? Think again. There are, in fact, six casinos that didn’t score any points at all. Absolutely no one mentioned any of our keywords, so we’re certain that these casinos just don’t cut it when it comes to romance.

Gun Lake Casino in Wayland had well over 400 Tripadvisor reviews without any of our keywords. There are more than 2,500 slots and almost 50 tables—but we guess that’s not enough to make for a romantic experience. “If I could leave zero stars, I would,” said one review, while others complained that the slots basically never pay out. 

Another property that scored a great big zero was Kewadin Casino, which claims to combine Vegas action with authentic regional flair, but some of the reviews would suggest that’s not the case. 

One person said, “They really need to take a field trip to the Holiday Inn if they want to know what comfort looks like. We abandoned the free room and paid for another one at a different hotel.” 

We don’t know about you, but we certainly wouldn’t consider the Holiday Inn to be the epitome of romance.

Amongst the casinos that did have a few keyword mentions was Firekeeper's Casino in Battle Creek, which got a rating of 0.34%. Three reviews out of more than 800 mentioned one of our keywords. 

One particular review was quite damning, saying, “Disgusted. Paid extra for a suite to have a romantic, relaxing evening. Tub full of black crap.” We saw the accompanying photos, and the jury’s still out on exactly what the black crap was.

Methodology 

Casinos.com utilized Tripadvisor reviews to do an in-depth analysis of phrases associated with being romantic to determine the Michigan casino that is the most romantic. We calculated the percentage of memorable-related mentions in the total Tripadvisor reviews.
