People in Ohio love casinos. And guess what? So do we. A match made in heaven, right? Well, almost. If Ohio were to legalize online casino sites, we would be the perfect couple, but we’ll take what we can get.
The casino industry in Ohio is booming. In fact, Ohio actually ranks sixth for gross gaming revenue in the entire country, according to Statista, bringing in $3.3 billion in 2023. Yes, you read that right. We said billion. Only Michigan, New York, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, and Nevada (obviously) bring in more gaming revenue than the Buckeye State.
Alongside the enormous revenue it brings, which equates to those sweet, sweet tax dollars that the economy loves, it also supports over 33,000 people with jobs. While there are a plethora of land-based destinations, online casinos remain illegal to play in the state, with the exception of social casinos. Natives will have to travel across state lines to Michigan if they want to play casino games online.
Things could be changing in that regard, however. In July 2024, three Republican political representatives sent a letter making the case for the introduction of iGaming. Online sports betting has been live in the state since January 2023, and Jay Edwards, Jeff LaRe, and Cindy Abrams mooted the “tremendous potential” in legalizing the online casino side of the industry, which would see a significant increase in tax revenue.
These are the casinos we took a look at:
But that’s enough of the legal stuff; let’s get into the real reason we’re here. At Casinos.com, we go from state to state and try to find interesting data around their casinos. It’s kind of our job. So this article is diving into which is the luckiest casino in the state of Ohio.
We follow the same methodology for each state, measuring keywords in the Tripadvisor review that we perceive could be related to luck, such as ‘lucky,’ ‘lucky,’ ‘winning,’ ‘won,’ ‘jackpot,’ and more. Of course, this does not equate to a definitive answer of luck, so take the results with a pinch of salt—but it does give us an impression of whether real-life visitors to these casinos got a rub of the green.
Well, if we knew the exact answer to this, I can promise you we would be there instead of here. But as we’re trusting the reviews of travelers, let’s dig into the details.
The luckiest casino in Ohio award goes to Eldorado Gaming Scioto Downs with a mouth-watering 46.97% on the luck scale! This figure was thanks largely to multiple mentions of ‘won’ (57), ‘winning’ (20) and perhaps most importantly, ‘jackpot’ (20), suggesting those who get lucky here get VERY lucky.
“I've won plenty of jackpots," wrote Ron. Good for you, Ron!
Another visitor added, “I recently won a jackpot and the staff was extremely helpful and professional. I enjoy coming to Scioto and love the variety of games.” Sounds good to us.
In second place was MGM Northfield Park. The Northfield-based property, which admittedly has far fewer reviews than the competition, came in with a healthy 39.18% luck percentage rating. Like first place, mentions of ‘won’ and ‘jackpot’ were plentiful.
In third place was Hollywood Gaming Mahoning Valley Race Course with 29.15%, followed closely by Hollywood Casino Columbus with 27.97%. They were followed up by two more Hollywood establishments, with Hollywood Casino Toledo next in the action, followed up by Hollywood Gaming at Dayton Raceway. But let’s dive a little further into the Hollywood Four.
For Hollywood Gaming Mahoning Valley Race Course, there were actually zero instances of the word ‘lucky’, but a healthy amount of ‘luck’ with 8 reviews of the 199 presenting that keyword.
Meanwhile, Hollywood Casino Columbus, with a whopping 740, has multiple instances of ‘lucky’ (16), ‘luck’ (33) and ‘won’ (105). There was also a decent amount of ‘profit’ mentioned (3), which does not come up often when compiling this research but is obviously a key indication of good luck!
“Since I came out ahead with $3 instead of behind by $3, I enjoyed myself." Hey, 43 profit is still profit; we won’t turn our noses up at that.
Unfortunately, we’ve gotten to the point where we must name the ‘unluckiest’ casino in Ohio, but we say this with the large caveat that this isn’t an exact science, so take it with a pinch of salt. The wooden spoon on our list goes to Hard Rock Casino in Cincinnati with a meager 5.63% on the luck scale.
Just 6 reviews of the 160 came up with our luck-related keywords, of which there are 10. Zero mentions of ‘lucky’, ‘luck’ and ‘hand pay’ are attributed to this bad score, with just one reference to ‘winning,’ ‘success,’ and ‘jackpot’ succumbing this Hard Rock establishment to the bottom of our table.
Casinos.com utilized Tripadvisor reviews to do an in-depth analysis of phrases associated with luck to determine the luckiest and unluckiest casinos in the state of Ohio. We calculated the percentage of luck-rated mentions in the total Tripadvisor reviews. Only casinos with the requisite number of reviews were chosen for this study in order to represent a fair data set. For Ohio, the minimum number of reviews was 80.
Keywords tracked: Lucky, Luck, Winning, Big Win, Winner, Bonus, Profit, Success, Jackpot, Hand Pay
