The South Dakota Department of Revenue has released its casino revenue figures for November 2024, revealing that operators generated over $9.8 million in gross revenue. That figure marks a steep decline of 12.5% from the over $11.1 million generated in November 2023 and a major drop from the $13.1 million generated in October 2024.
Combined with the around $145,000 in revenues collected from sports betting and removing promo play and excise tax, South Dakota generated over $9.4 million in taxable adjusted gross revenue. The 9% tax rate led to a tax payment of around $853,000.
Rather than splitting revenues by operator, the South Dakota Department of Revenue releases figures by game type.
Of the 13 game types, six posted positive revenue growth. The most significant increase came from $0.10 slots, which increased revenues by over 58% year-on-year.
All the other game types which saw increases in revenues were table games. Blackjack led the charge by increasing its revenues from around $320,000 to $425,000 year-on-year. Meanwhile, house-banked poker and player-banked poker revenues increased by 25.8% and 17.5%, respectively. Craps revenues jumped by 22.5% year-on-year, while roulette revenues increased by 17.1%.

However, the biggest revenue generator for South Dakota casinos is $0.01 slots, which accounted for almost 77.5% of the total revenue collected in November 2024. The 9.5% drop in revenue between November 2023 and November 2024 for this game type was enough to wipe out increases from $0.10 slots, roulette, craps, player-banked and house-banked poker, and blackjack combined.
The rest of the deficit comes from other types of slots seeing revenue drops. Significantly, $1.00 slot revenues fell from around $712,000 to $420,000 year-on-year.
While South Dakota casino revenues dropped year-on-year and month-on-month in South Dakota, that hasn’t been the trend for most of 2024. October’s massive $13.1 million revenue haul was an increase on the previous year, and according to reports, Deadwood Casino revenues in the first half of 2024 were up 1.5% compared to the prior year.
While there are no indications in the reports, SD casinos have recently faced trouble and fines from the South Dakota Commission on Gaming. Blue Sky Gaming, which operates Tin Lizzie Gaming Resort, was handed a $3,000 fine for failing to provide surveillance of the cashier cage, tables, and count room. Additionally, games were going above the $200 betting limit for blackjack.
