North Dakota is home to five main casinos, with all five being tribal casinos. But in truth, they are not just casinos, with many of them being full-blown resorts worthy of trips for everyone, not just betting fans.
There are actually over 20 of them overall in the state, a lot of whom are charitable casinos. And it’s a good thing they have a good selection to choose from, with casino sites not yet legal in the Peace Garden State.
The casino industry in North Dakota isn’t as booming as other states like Nevada and New Jersey, but it’s still a pretty important part of the economy. As of December 2023, it supported over 3,400 jobs and brought in $61.2 million in tax, with a total of $243.8 million in gross gaming revenue (as of 2016), according to American Gaming.
It’s not just casino sites that are yet to be legalized in North Dakota; the same can be said for sports betting, which passed regulations and is available to bettors, but only in the form of in-person bets. The most recent state-of-affairs would bring online sports betting to the state in 2025, with online casinos and even more distant prospects.
The spokespeople for North Dakota tourism promise Vegas-style casinos to their visitors, with smaller intimate venues available over the bigger establishment boasting wide-ranging amenities.
Here are the ones we considered:
But we’re not here for the amenities, so let’s cut to the chase. At Casinos.com, we go from state to state and try to find interesting data around their casinos. It’s kind of our job, among many other casino-related tasks. So this article is diving into which is the luckiest casino in the state of North Dakota.
We follow the same methodology for each state, measuring keywords in the Tripadvisor review that we perceive could be related to luck, such as "lucky," “luck," “winning,” “won,” "jackpot,” and more. Of course, this does not equate to a definitive answer of luck, so don’t take the results too seriously; they are intended to be for entertainment purposes only.
Coming in at the number one spot for North Dakota was the Dakota Magic Casino with an impressive luck percentage score of 27.27%. The Hankinson-based establishment had several mentions of ‘won’ (5) and ‘winning’ (4) across its 55 reviews, with two mentions of ‘bonus’ to boot.
“The rewards card is a definite must. It was also my birthday month, so I got an extra bonus with casino bucks to play with and a free drink,” wrote one reviewer. Make sure to stop by if your birthday is coming up! This spot also offers wedding anniversary promotions alongside car giveaways and “stay and play” deals at their hotel.
In second place was the 4 Bears Casino, located on the beautiful Lake Sakakawea in New Town. While they are also giving away a 2024 Harley Davidson Fatboy, alongside two chances to win $100k, the keywords ‘winner’ (3) and ‘won’ (3) were the most common out of the 42 reviews, landing 4 Bears Casino with a 21.43% luck percentage rating, albeit with the smallest sample size out of all casinos in the list.
“The casino was not busy on Sunday but booming on Thursday, probably because of the free slot tournament. Many people entered the tournament because of the monetary offering for the winners,” wrote one Tripadvisor reviewer. It sounds like there are more ways than one to win here.
In third place, with a luck rating of 19.59%, was the Spirit Lake Casino in Saint Michael. The most reviewed establishment in the state, Spirit Lake Casino, didn’t exactly inspire us with it’s reviews overall, resulting in just 2.5 stars out of 5. However, some people did mention ‘won’, ‘bonus’ and ‘lucky’.
“The casino was a little tight this trip but in the past I've won a few hundred,” a bit of a good news/bad news review, but hey, a win is a win, right?
“The casino is small and the games are limited, but I won $200 so who can complain?” Some better luck was on the cards for this traveler.
Trailing in behind in 4th and 5th place was Sky Dancer Hotel & Casino with 15.87% and Prairie Knights Casino & Resort, which scored a pretty meager 5.81%. Overall, we can establish that North Dakota casinos do have some elements of luck, if Tripadvisor reviews are to be believed. However, all five with the qualifying amount of reviews were relatively low on review numbers, and a bigger sample set could provide a better indication overall.
Casinos.com utilized Tripadvisor reviews to do an in-depth analysis of phrases associated with luck to determine the luckiest and unluckiest casinos in the state of North Dakota. We calculated the percentage of luck-rated mentions in the total Tripadvisor reviews. Only casinos with the requisite number of reviews were chosen for this study in order to represent a fair data set. For North Dakota, the minimum number of reviews was 40.
