Gambling in Massachusetts has seen significant advances over the last few years. Lottery was officially available since 1971, but the Expanded Gaming Act legalized casino gaming in the state in 2011. Following years of regulatory process, sports betting also became legal, including mobile sports betting, in March 2023, but online poker remains outlawed. Even still, it’s pretty safe to say, Bay Staters have plenty of options available when it comes to betting and gambling.
The Bay State is home to three fully operational casino destinations, two of which close to Boston, with a third found in Springfield. Encore Boston Harbour is located north of Boston, with Plainridge Park Casino situated just off I-495 in Plainville. Finally, we have the MGM Springfield, which opened in 2018 in—you guessed it—Springfield. All three locations offer casino games aplenty, with much more on offer, being fully-fledged resorts that cater to most, if not all.
Unfortunately, casino sites are still not available in the state; with current indications, this is not something that will be brought to the table anytime soon. The land-based destinations are still quite lucrative to the state, bringing in $27 million in taxes in June of 2024. For reference, sports wagering only brought in $8.2 million during the same period.
But enough guff, let’s get into the real reason we’re here. At Casinos.com, we go from state to state and try to find fascinating data around their casinos. It’s kind of our job. So this article is diving into which is the luckiest casino in the state of Massachusetts.
We follow the same methodology for each state, measuring keywords in the Tripadvisor review that we perceive could be related to luck, such as "lucky," “lucky," "winning," "won," "jackpot,” and more. Of course, this does not equate to a definitive answer of luck, so take the results with a pinch of salt—but it does give us an impression of whether real-life visitors to these casinos got a rub of the green.
Which is Massachusetts’ Luckiest Casino?
Rank | Casino | No. Reviews | Total KWs | Luck % |
---|---|---|---|---|
1. | Plainridge Park Casino | 481 | 168 | 34.93% |
2. | MGM Springfield | 256 | 75 | 29.30% |
3. | Encore Boston Harbor Casino | 261 | 75 | 28.74% |
The moment we’ve all been waiting for. Or maybe not, because the answers have been above this whole time. But Plainridge Park Casino emerged as Massachusetts ‘luckiest’ casino, topping the pile of three with 34.93%.
Plainridge Park Casino, operated by Penn Entertainment, had copious mentions of ‘winning’, ‘winner’, ‘bonus’ and ‘jackpot’ across their 481 reviews. With 900 slots and over 420 gaming tables, there are plenty of places to try your luck. But what did patrons have to say?
“The machines are not as tight as the other casinos in New England!” said John, which sounds like an award in itself!
Another reviewer wrote, “While visiting family, we took a quick trip here and two out of three of us left as winners. It’s small, compared to casinos I’ve been to in Atlantic City, but it was fun and a number of people seemed to be winning.” Good things come in small packages, it seems.
There’s only three casinos of note in the Old Colony State, so instead of naming one of them the unluckiest, we’re just going to let you know about the bright side of all three. There wasn’t too much between MGM Springfield and Encore Boston Harbor Casino, just 0.56% in fact, but it was MGM Springfield that came out just in front with 28.30% on the luck percentage scale.
Both establishments had almost identical numbers of reviews and had the exact same amount of luck-related keywords. MGM having five fewer reviews gave them the edge, so I guess you could say they got lucky by having a smaller sample size.
Still, MGM presented a lot of “luck” and “won” mentions, even though Encore Boston had more mentions of jackpot, which could mean when you get lucky there—you get very, very lucky.
Casinos.com utilized Tripadvisor reviews to do an in-depth analysis of phrases associated with luck to determine the luckiest and unluckiest casinos in the state of Massachusetts. We calculated the percentage of luck-rated mentions in the total Tripadvisor reviews.
