Wisconsin is a must-visit for any intrepid travelers, not just for the cheese curds and the Great Lakes, but also for the gambling scene. And yes, we can confirm that some of Wisconsin’s casinos offer a five-star experience.
The state has a long history with gambling. As of 1839, all forms of gambling, including lotteries, were officially banned. In the 1960s, sweepstakes and promotional contests were allowed, and charitable bingo came along in the 1970s. It wasn’t long until those sweet, sweet slot games started popping up. Potawatomi Casino and Hotel was the first one to open, and it now welcomes over 6 million guests annually. To put that into context, about 30 million visit Vegas annually, so 6 million isn’t too bad for a little casino in Wisconsin.
There are plenty of other casinos to choose from, as Wisconsin is actually home to 25 tribal casinos, spread all across the state. But which one of those offers the most luxurious experience?
We got a little help from Tripadvisor to put together our list of the most luxurious casinos in Wisconsin. We looked at all of the reviews in search of keywords like "luxury," "impressive," and "fancy," and based on the number of mentions, we were able to rank the casinos. These are the results:

Potawatomi Casino Hotel | 127/136 | 486 | 52 | 10.70% |
Legendary Waters Casino | 16/16 | 65 | 5 | 7.69% |
Menominee Casino Resort | 17/13 | 63 | 3 | 4.76% |
Ho-Chunk Gaming Madison | 33/28 | 149 | 5 | 3.36% |
Ho-Chunk Gaming Nekoosa | 13/9 | 60 | 2 | 3.33% |
St Croix Casino Danbury | 21/16 | 62 | 2 | 3.23% |
Ho-Chunk Gaming Wisconsin Dells | 137/100 | 504 | 16 | 3.17% |
Ho-Chunk Gaming Black River Falls | 21/5 | 61 | 1 | 1.64% |
Oneida Casino | 101/67 | 369 | 4 | 1.08% |
Ho-Chunk Gaming Wittenberg topped our list, with a respectable 14.89% on the Luxury Scale. "Impressive," "comfortable," and “comfort” were all mentioned. The casino underwent a massive renovation just a few years ago, so the gaming area has been expanded, plus there’s a large hotel and a conference center.
One reviewer said, “The hotel is lovely, nice decor, big showers, comfortable beds. The staff is so nice and helpful," while another was pleased with the wet bar, coffee maker, and ice machine in the room.
Coming in at number two, North Star Mohican Casino wasn’t far off the top spot, with 13.04%. The words “luxurious” and “comfortable” came up, and one person even referred to the experience as being “fancy”. Said one review, “As ALWAYS, we had an awesome time at Northstar. We especially like the cleanliness of the casino and rooms. The employees are super fun and helpful." Sounds good to us!
In third place, Potawatomi Casino Hotel received a Luxury Rating of 10.70%. A huge 38 people said that this one was "impressive," and six called it out as being "delightful."
We liked the review that said, “Our one-night stay at the Potawatomi was very impressive. From the valet attendant to the attentive front desk staff, our welcome as a 10+. Our room was on the 14th floor overlooking the city skyline. Floor-to-ceiling windows captured the view!” A skyline view? Count us in!
Way down on the other end of the scale, Oneida Casino got a pretty dismal 1.08%, as there were only four mentions of any of our keywords in a total of 369 reviews.
Oneida offers a selection of over 2,800 slots, plus bars, dining options, and a hotel, so it’s advertised as a great place for a weekend getaway. But is it really? “This place is dirty; no dealers, no tables, too many slots. They closed the only craps table due to someone bleeding from a hangnail and it took them two hours to clean and then I gave up." Nope, I would not go there for a weekend getaway if you paid me.
Ho-Chunk Gaming Black River Falls also didn’t fare too well, 1.64%. Here, only one person mentioned a keyword, and it was “comfortable”, which is not exactly a sign that this casino is luxurious at all. One unfortunate reviewer had bad things to say about basically all aspects of the experience. “The hotel was kinda dirty. The casino hardly paid out. The buffet was terrible. Not many choices, the food was very bland”.
