A plan to build a casino destination in Ballincollig, Cork, is still alive after an appeal was lodged with An Bord Pleanála to overturn a planning refusal by Cork City Council.
The proposal, submitted by Coalquay Leisure Ltd., aims to convert a vacant unit in Westside Retail Park, which formerly housed Fehily's Fitness centre, into slots and amusement arcade. However, the council refused the application due to concerns about the "adult-oriented" nature of the facility and its potential for nuisance.
Sinn Féin Councillor Joe Lynch has urged the community to rally once again against the proposal. The councillor has been a vocal opponent of the project, convinced that it offers no benefits to the community.
"There are only negatives, and it should be rejected," Lynch said, echoing the concerns of dozens of community members who have lodged objections with the council.
Despite the initial rejection, the developers have appealed to An Bord Pleanála, and Lynch is determined to keep the fight going.
"We do not want this proposal," he declared, calling on the community to unite in opposition. With the stakes high, Lynch is doubling down on his efforts to prevent the casino from becoming a reality.
In their appeal, Coalquay Leisure Ltd argues that local objections are based on "historical stigma rather than evidence" and that the development would bring economic benefits to the area.
They also suggest that temporary permission to operate the casino for several years could be a compromise.
The company operates gaming and amusement arcades in Goldrush Casinos’ in Cork, Dublin, and various town centres, including Carlow, Naas, Ennis, Athy, and Wexford.
Coalquay Leisure Ltd insisted that all of these venues “operate successfully and positively contribute to a broad mix of uses”. The appeal document also points out that similar age restrictions were applied to the previous gym/fitness centre use without causing integration issues. An Bord Pleanála has not yet set a target date for its decision.
Most of my career was spent in teaching including at one of the UK’s top private schools. I left London in 2000 and set up home in Wales raising four beautiful children. I enrolled at University where I studied Photography and film and gained a Degree and subsequently a Masters Degree. In 2014 I helped launch a new local newspaper and managed to get front and back page as well as 6 filler pages on a weekly basis. I saw that journalism was changing and was a pioneer of hyperlocal news in Wales. In 2017 I started one of the first 24/7 free independent news sites for Wales. Having taken that to a successful business model I was keen for a new challenge. Joining the company is exciting for me especially as it is a new role in Europe. I am keen to establish myself and help others to do the same.
