BetMGM Awards Largest Online Casino Jackpot in US Gaming History

A lucky anonymous player from New Jersey made American history on Monday, winning a $6.4 million jackpot at BetMGM’s online casino. 

The prize represents the largest payout ever awarded in the history of the regulated online casino industry in the United States.

‘The Big One’ Pays Out on $200 Bet

The player won the progressive jackpot on the morning of August 19, after making a $200 bet on the Fruit Blaster slot machine. The five-reel slot is part of BetMGM’s “The Big One” jackpot pool, which covers several in-house games from Entain. Players can contribute to the jackpot and potentially win at BetMGM, Borgata, Party Casino, or Wheel of Fortune Casino.

“BetMGM and one lucky player made iGaming history,” Adam Greenblatt, CEO of BetMGM, said in a statement. “It’s been a summer filled with anticipation watching the progressive jackpot grow quickly to record levels.”

The growing jackpot began to make headlines over the past two months as it first surpassed the previous US online gambling record, then left it far in the distance. The previous biggest win game in 2021, when a user playing MGM Grand Millions won $3.5 million. Monday’s big win beat that mark by nearly $3 million.

“BetMGM congratulates the winner on this historic jackpot,” BetMGM Vice President of Gaming Angus Nisbet said in a statement. “It’s these ‘you never know when’ moments that make progressive jackpots especially thrilling. In addition to the jackpot, we hope the player enjoys their trip to an MGM Resort in the near future.”

MGM has added free trips to their properties for winners of all jackpots of $500,000 or more. The idea is to add an extra layer to the experience of a big win.

The Biggest Jackpots in Casino History

While the massive jackpot is surely lifechanging and set a new record for licensed US online casinos, it still pales in comparison to some of the biggest prizes ever awarded in the gaming industry.

When it comes to online gambling, the all-time record belongs to Microgaming’s WowPot! Wheel of Wishes machine, which paid out a prize worth nearly $42.9 million on December 20, 2023. That shattered the previous record of $23.6 million won on Microgaming’s Mega Moolah slot machine in April 2021.

In the realm of live casinos, the biggest jackpot ever was awarded in 2003 at the Excalibur in Las Vegas. That’s when the famous Megabucks progressive jackpot machine give out a prize of more than $39.7 million to a 25-year-old software engineer from California.
