New York City is pretty synonymous with luxury, and New York casinos are no exception.
A quick Google search told us that one of the most expensive hotels in NYC is the Four Seasons, and if we wanted to book a suite for tonight, it would cost about $7,000. It comes with a terrace, mini bar, and ironing facilities (but who are we kidding, if we could afford $7,000 for a hotel room, we wouldn’t be doing our own ironing).
But anyway, we seriously digress from the point of this article - what we’re trying to say is that New York is full of luxury. But how do the casinos stack up?
Well, there are a total of 34 casinos in the state, and they’re definitely not restricted to just NYC.
In fact, there are quite a few in upstate New York too. As of 2023, the gross gaming revenue in the state is $4.72 billion, and over 69,000 people are employed by the gambling industry across the state.
Going back a little in history, gambling was first legalized in the state back in 1976, when off-track racing was allowed. But actual casinos were banned until as recently as 2001. After 9/11, the state decided to allow Indian casinos, and only in 2013 did the state legalize full casino gambling.
So the state really hasn’t had a lot of time to work on building up a portfolio of luxurious casinos.
Nonetheless, we were curious to see which lucky New York casino tops the list as the most luxurious, so we devised a method.
The Casinos.com team analyzed TripAdvisor reviews, in search of certain keywords like “magnificent”, “luxurious”, and “fancy”. Depending on how many times those were mentioned, each casino got a rating on our Luxury Scale.
We looked at these casinos to see which has the highest luxury rating:
Right at the top of the list, we have del Lago Resort & Casino, where more than half the reviews were a four or five star, and 10 out of about 600 reviews used the word “impressive”. Overall, del Lago got 13.93% Luxury on our scale.
del Lago promises “old world charm and modern hospitality”, and the reviews reflect that.
As one review says, “Easy Drive, entertainment, and luxury rooms to accommodate. Have a blast then relax!”
Don’t mind if we do.
Moving on to number two, Akwesasne Mohawk Casino which has over 1,150 slots and a resort-style hotel, got 12.39% on the scale.
This one had a combined total of 32 mentions of “comfort” or “comfortable”, and two people even called it “delightful”. “Stayed at the brand new Mohawk Casino Hotel for 2 nights… It was delightful. The staff would bend over backwards to make you happy.” What a shining endorsement.
In third place, it’s Tioga Downs Casino Resort with 11.50%, and 26 mentions of our keywords. There are 161 guest rooms, 950 slots, more than 30 table games like poker, plus other amenities like a buffet.
One review says “We have gone there many times to stay and we always have a great stay. The rooms we stay in are always clean and comfortable. We also enjoy the outdoor and indoor pool and hot tub. We will be staying there again.” Yep, that’s good enough for us.
Moving on to the other end of the scale, we have Resorts World right at the bottom of the list.
What’s that I hear you say? “I thought Resorts World was in Birmingham, UK?” Well, it’s also in Vegas, Singapore, and even New York City. Unfortunately for Resorts World, the NYC location only received 2.81% on our Luxury Scale. Absolutely no mentions of “luxury” or “luxurious”, and only five out of 391 went as far as to call it “comfortable”.
“This place is disgusting”, says one review. Yikes.
Ranking just slightly better than Resorts World was Monticello Casino and Raceway, with a 3.23% rating. It’s both a casino and a horse racing destination, but as one review put it, these are the “remnants of what was once likely a nice horse track”. RIP, Monticello.
Casinos.com utilized Tripadvisor reviews to do an in-depth analysis of phrases associated with luxury to determine the most luxurious casinos in New York. We calculated the percentage of luxury-rated mentions in the total Tripadvisor reviews.
Keywords tracked: luxury, luxurious, magnificent, delightful, comfort, comfortable, impressive, pleasure, indulge, extravagant, fancy, exclusive, satisfied
